Flowers Named Cannas

Ranked #12,570 in Home & Garden, #168,830 overall | Donates to Big Cat Rescue, Peace First

People commonly dub this plant a "canna lily" but it is not a true lily. It is related to a lily but is a rhizome which you must dig up in zone 8 or above and place in moist plastic to over-winter. Or if in a large pot you can simply take them indoors as houseplants during the winter. Cannas are tropical and/or subtropical flowering plants which have large leaves similar to a banana. They thrive in full sun.

This picture was taken at Washington Park in Denver, Colorado. In Colorado the cities and counties like to plant these large bloomers in parks and road medians.

Learn More About Cannas

People often grow cannas mostly for their large ornamental leaves which can be found in greens, blue-greens, variegations and stripes. Some of the varieties include Stuttgart, the President, Bengal Tiger and Lucifer. Some Cannas are even grown in ponds. You should deadhead the blooms so they will continue blooming. They like to be fertilized a couple times per season, in early spring and mid-summer. Bloom colors include yellows, oranges, reds and combinations of colors.

I like cannas too and have a big garden bed of them on my water overflow in the garden. They love all the water and are about six foot high and bright red. Every year the frost knocks them down and they start off again, more and more each year.

I love Canna's (and so do the hummingbirds at the Botanical Gardens). I find them to be very unique with a unique beauty. Loving your photography, you are doing great.
