Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Jose Luis Castillo

The date was April 20, 2002. Fight night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jose Luis Castillo and Floyd Mayweather were fighting each other for the first time. Castillo was the WBC lightweight champion and Mayweather was moving up in weight to try and capture it. Mayweather had a perfect record of 27 wins, 20 of which were via knockouts. Castillo on the other hand had 45 wins, 41 of which he won via knockouts. He also had 4 losses and a draw on his record. They fought the full twelve rounds and in the end Mayweather was awarded a unanimous decision victory. The judges' scorecards were as follows:
John Keane (England) - 115-111 Mayweather
Jerry Roth (U.S.) - 115-111 Mayweather
Anek Hongtongkam (Thailand) - 116-111 Mayweather

Mayweather's win however was a very controversial one. The majority of the boxing community believed that Castillo should have had his hands raised when the fight ended. That Mayweather received a "GIFT" win. Harold Lederman, Larry Merchant, Jim Lampley and George Foreman who covered the fight for HBO all had Castillo winning as well.

On the other end of the table were the fans and people in the boxing community who agreed with the judges' decision. They thought Mayweather had done enough to deserve the victory.

This fight still remains as one of the most controversial bouts in boxing history. Mayweather is considered among if not the very best of his generation. He keeps flaunting his perfect record but every time he does, he keeps reminding the boxing fans of the fight which many believe he lost.

Mayweather and Castillo had a rematch 8 months later but this time Mayweather clearly beat Castillo.
