Garage Sales & Grandmothers
Finding treasures of books for free or cheap...
It probably goes back to memories more than anything. My granny was the garage sale queen, and she always picked up any half decent book she came upon. I know it was she who nurtured my love of reading, from the time I could read a sentence she was loaning me books.
Once I was old enough to have a collection of my own we were trading back and forth. We could each easily read a book a day given the time to do so. And some weeks I would do just that, staying up well into the night to finish them. I have never liked to leave a book unfinished, it always felt like a movie that got turned off early and I would spend the night thinking and dreaming what might happen next. Basically it just really shows one of my flaws -- patience!! I've just never been great at waiting, and don't like to do so if I can help it.
My granny and I would read the heavy duty scary stuff like Stephen King and Dean Koontz and lighten it up with romance books from authors like Nora Roberts, Julie Garwood, and many others. Romance novels were always the easiest to come by and were ALMOST literally a dime a dozen at garage sales.
My granny died some years ago from cancer, but there isn't a time that I don't start a book and think of her. This love of reading she gave to me is such an important role in my life, and I hope that I pass that love onto my kids.
