Care And Feeding Of Flutes.

Save On Repair Costs.

1) When you are done playing you should clean out your flute.

2) Use a soft cloth wrapped around a cleaning rod to dry all of the spit out. The white cleaning cloth is pictured on the left side.

Then you should put swabs in your flute to keep your flute dry. Pictured here, they have orange and yellow stripes.

If you don't clean your flute the moisture will rot the pads and you will need to replace them sooner. Don't make this costly error.

3) Polish your flute to keep it shiny. This is more of a cosmetic thing, but it is good to keep your flute looking good. It is the yellow pad in the right upper corner.

4) Store your flute in it's case to keep it from getting kicked or damaged.

5) Avoid extreme heat or cold.

6) If you upgrade your flute, you should still play your old flute to keep the pads from rotting. After you are done playing your old flute, you should still clean it.

7) If food collects on your head joint, you should clean it off. I take my polishing cloth, and wipe it over the lip plate.
One clarinetist in my school band always brushes her teeth before she plays, so that the food won't go in her instrument.

8) If you have guards for your flute, you should use them. Guards are silver round objects in the lower part of the picture.

9) Don't put stuff in your case that your case was not meant to hold. You could damage your instrument.

10) Don't try to repair your instrument yourself. Take it to a professional repairman.

Flute Tone Tips

Ten Simple Tips For Better Tone.

Drink water before playing the flute to make your mouth moist. This tip will improve your tone. Playing with a dry mouth gives you bad tone. Don't over do it. If you drink to much, that will also give you bad tone.

2) Push your right arm out, pushing your flute into your lips. It will give you better tone.

3) Have good posture. Bad posture cuts off air supply if you are slouching. Your tone won't be as good.

4) Take deep breaths so you won't have to breath as often.

5) Tilt your fingers toward your back. Avoid rolling your flute forward or you will make your pitch too sharp.

6) Raise your head for higher notes, lower your head for lower notes. This will angle your air, down for lower notes, up for higher notes.

7) Use a tuner to make sure you are in tune. When you are in tune with everyone else, that's called intonation. Read about how to keep your flute in tune. All the tips about how to tune your piccolo also apply to tuning your flute.

8) Practicing the flute will help you improve your tone. Practice the effective way, and get more from practicing.

9) Use vibrato . Vibrato is a key tool to having better tone.

10) Use chopsaver on your lips. (see below) Chop saver doesn't have petroleum in it. It is a great product to moisten lips.

Private Lessons

My #1 Tip For Great Flute Playing.

I you are serious about playing the flute, you should get a private teacher.

Like being home schooled, you get one on one attention so you learn faster. Private teachers teach you at the speed you need. If your lesson partner is having trouble with something, your teacher probably won't move on until they have that thing down. Thus, slowing you down. If you have private lessons, you don't have to worry about your lesson partner learning at a different speed than you.

Private teachers can help you with technique like double tonguing. You can learn all sorts of different flute techniques with a private teacher that a band director won't teach you.

Flute Fingering Chart

Get This Free Woodwind Fingering Guide For Flute.

---->Click Here For Fingering Chart

Ever wonder if you've got the right fingering for a note?

This fingering chart has all the notes, low C all the up the scale to fourth octave F.

It also has all the flats and sharps, trills, tremolos, and alternate fingerings.

This fingering chart will satisfy your needs, if you are a beginner or an intermediate flutist.

Flutes Of Many Kinds

Students usually start with a closed hole flute. Learning to cover the holes adds too much difficulty for the beginner.

As you get better, you will want to consider an open hole flute. An open hole flute sounds better. The holes give a flutist feedback of how much air they are putting through the flute. This feedback gives the flutist tremendous control and finesse.

When you first get an open hole flute, take the plugs out 1 at a time. Start by taking one of the 3 plugs under your right hand. Take all of those plugs out 1 at a time. Then, take the plug out from under your tallest finger on your left hand. Last, take out the plug for your ring finger.

Also, flutes can be "B foot", or "C foot". A B foot flute has an extra key, so you can play low B. A C foot flute is lacking that key.

Advanced players like to have a gizmo key. A gizmo key is an extra key on a B foot flute that allows you to play third octave C with even better sound quality.

Good Flute Brands

If you like other brands, I would check the flute's brand's reputation before I buy it. Make sure that the flute's brand has a good reputation for making good quality instruments. Alexis' #1 Tip For Buying A Flute

You should try out the flute before buying it. Don't buy solely on brand reputation. It has to feel comfortable and sound pleasing. Even the most expensive top brand flute might not be right for you.

If you buy from an online seller make sure they have a friendly return policy.
