Fly Cheaply Overseas

I Hate Flying, but it's Better than Horseback

Airports and airplanes are crowded, stressful and uncomfortable. The food is tasteless and expensive. And, airline lavatories are foul-smelling, and claustrophobic.

But, this all beats the "old" methods of travel, which our forefathers were relegated to. Gone are those days of the slow and bumpy cross-continental horseback trek. Or the, even more dangerous, cross-hemispheric sailboat trip. Travel is much less treacherous now.

The ability to travel halfway around the world in less than 1 day (for less than $1k) boggles my mind. It's even more ridiculous when you can do this for under $400, or even less. This is when things get exciting.

For example, in 2009, I flew from Los Angeles to Barcelona for $299 (round-trip) on Delta. WTF? Yes, it's true. These deals exist. I look for them every day and post them on my blog, Fresh Airfare.

Los Angeles to Barcelona for $299

This really happened in '09. See the proof.

Barcelona Itinerary

This $299 fare lasted for only about 24 hours before it disappeared. I saw it right before I went to bed on June 9th, 2009. I couldn't believe my eyes and stayed up the next three hours deciding between Barcelona or Madrid. I chose Barcelona.

When I woke up the next morning, the price had shot back up to the $500's.

Additionally, Las Vegas to Barcelona (or Madrid) was available for only $209 round-trip.

See my airline ticket receipt. Yes, it was really only $299.

7 Strategies to Find You the Lowest Airfares

Flexibility is The Key

  1. Be flexible with your times of the week. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are historically the cheapest days to fly. Also, Saturdays can yield bargains. Friday, Sundays and Mondays can be more difficult days to fly at a good price, but they still exist.
  2. Be flexible with your times of the year. Flying during non-peak times of year, such as October through April to North America and Europe, or May through September to the South Pacific and South America, can save money. Flying on July 4th, December 25th and Thanksgiving Day are cheap days to fly due to low demand.
  3. Be flexible with your times of day. Flying during of day such as the early morning or late night can yield deals.
  4. Be flexible with your airports/cities. See if flying into a different airport, perhaps even in a nearby city, is cheaper. For example, try Newark instead of JFK and LaGuardia in New York City, and Fort Lauderdale instead of Miami.
  5. Be flexible with your stopovers. Flights with one or more connections are sometimes cheaper than direct, non-stop ones.
  6. Book 7, 14 or even 21 days in advance to acquire the lowest fare. We recommend at least 30 days in advance for international travel. However, tracking fares even further in advance is the smartest.
  7. Check round-trip fares even if you're flying one-way. It's sometimes cheaper to purchase a round-trip ticket and just fly one leg of it.
