How I got started fly-fishing: When I was about 17 years old rock climbing was my life. My friends and I would climb almost daily and travel all across the Rocky Mountain states climbing and having a great time. However one summer my friend Jed and I injured our tendons - total bummer! One day while eating lunch at Smith's supermarket Jed picked up a fly-fishing magazine to read.
We decided to learn how to fly-fish, and it just so happened that Wild Country Fly Shop was in the same shopping complex as the Smiths. We stopped in and told the owner we wanted to learn how to fly-fish. We bought a bunch of gear, books, and videos on how to fly-fish.
That's when the fun began!
Literally every day we'd get our fly rods out, tie a piece of yarn on then end and practise casting according to how people like Doug Swisher taught on the videos.
My obsession with fly-fishing began to grow and grow despite the fact that it took months before Jed and I caught a fish. We'd read magazines and see amazing pictures of the Green River and the Silver Creek in Sun Valley, etc and then on the weekends we would take a road trip to those places. Hey there were big fish in the pictures - we thought, "we ought to be able to catch'em too!"
I remember my first trip to the Green River below Flaming Gorge dam. We spent 3 days fishing there. BIG fish everywhere! We would sit there and dangle a fly in front of the big, uninterested trout that hang out on the edge of the river. I sat there wondering, "why won't you bite that yummy fly."
Well I was a naive and unexperienced and didn't catch a single fish on that trip, but my passion grew and the competition was raging inside of me. I soon began to understand the concepts, the techniques, and habits of the trout. And with that I began catching trout and then some more trout -- I had found a passion for fly-fishing.
Fly Fishing - True River Therapy
Dry Fly Fishing
After years of fly fishing, I can't say I never get a snag or a nasty wind knot - because I do - just not as oftern :). But it's so nice to be able to step into the river and quasi-instinctively know what I need to do to catch a trout. It's like the river is speaking to me. And when this happens true "River Therapy" takes place.
What do ya think?
Hey everyone!
I am curious to know what you all think about my lense. Please leave some feedback.
Thanks!

- It's my therapy too. I've just not gotten out there enough this year. Every time I do get out there, it's like I never left. Good lens, it makes me want to set up my fly rod right now.

- Fly fishing is a passion of mine also, it actually keeps me sane. I can't get enough of it. I live on the east coast of Canada and we do a lot of Salmon, trout, bass and pickerel fishing on the fly and it's a blast.
I enjoyed your lens and would like to read more as you add to it. Good luck friend.
