Fly Fishing 101 | Fly Fishing for Dummies Class begins

This is a lens that is a beginners course like fly fishing 101 or fly fishing for dummies to teach people who are interested in fly fishing some of the basics of the greatest sport around. I will talk about trout fly patterns and casting and let you know where you can get any answer you are looking for to get started in the best sport ever.

How to fly cast

Fly fishing 101 starts with the straight cast. If you would like to start with what fish eat you can check out one of my other lenses. The two most common problems that people have is not keeping their back cast high enough and the line and the leader tangling during the cast. To keep your back cast high you need to stop powering your cast through the 12 0'clock position but let the rod drift back to the 2 O'clock position as the back cast unfolds. Casting a high back cast will keep you out of trees and bushes along the banks of the river that seem to jump out at you when your back is turned. Most fish are caught on casts that are 30 to 40 feet. This is fortunate because most people can't cast more then 30 to 40 feet, but I don't want to go off on that tangent, but a high back cast in this range is perfect. It's only when you are making long cast that you need to flatten out the back cast so you can shoot lots of line on the forward cast. A high back cast is fundamental to fly casting.

Prevent tangling of line and leader

Imagine a rear view of some one casting a fly line. When he brings the rod forward on the cast the rod is in the 12 O'clock plane, and when he brings the rod back on the back cast it is in the 1 O'clock plane. So as the line travels forward it is straight up and down and when you back cast it is slightly to the side separating the forward and back cast planes. Viewed from above the rod tip would be seen as traveling in an oval. This is the most effective way to eliminate the problem of tangles with the line and leader.
