The act of casting a fly is really the art of casting the fly line. The fly itself is just along for the line. I have always been an advocate of practicing casting. Even though I have been fly fishing for many years I still start the year by taking my rods out to my backyard and getting the feel of them with some early season practice. While there are many methods that casting technique can be taught, getting a feel for the rod moving the line is vital to being successful. Casting is also where it is very important that the proper weight line be matched to the size of the rod. A line that is too light will not impart enough force to bend the rod during the casting motion and hence the rod does not get "loaded" enough to propel force to the line.
