Fly Fishing Tips

Fly Fishing Tips is a lens to give both newbies and experienced fly anglers some ways to improve their results as they experience the fun of the wonderful world of fly fishing! Proper fly fishing equipment, good presentation of the fly as well as using the right artificial fly can all add up to great success.

Fly Fishing Tips - Fly Fishing Equipment

Better fly fishingHaving a good fly fishing outfit will increase your chances of success and enable you to cast better. A beginner may want to purchase a complete outfit that includes rod, reel and line. This will ensure that the rod and line match and you have the proper balance. Often this type of purchase is easier on the budget as well. As with many recreation activities fly fishing can become rather expensive. Another option would be to select the items you want in either method you want to have the proper balance. A good general outfit might include a 6 weight rod in the range of 71/2 to 9 feet, a 6 weight line (weighted forward or tapered) and a reel with a modest amount of backing line. A selection of leaders can be 9 foot and 12 foot with 3X to 6X tippets. This set up will allow you to proceed with most types of freshwater fishing.
For a complete beginner at fly fishing it might be suggested that you do NOT spend tons of money on fly fishing equipment until you know if you really enjoy the sport. Fly fishing equipment can gat rather expensive. There will be plenty of time later to add to your equipment and upgrade some of your gear, Heck this is half the fun of fly fishing! Once you have some experience you will then know just what you like and what you need for the type of fishing you are doing.
Probably the most important thing about your equipment is that you should feel comfortable casting with the rod and be able to make a very good presentation. This often requires practice. You do not have to wait until you are out on the water as you can easily practice casting in your back yard. This is something even experienced fly anglers should do to be ready for the season.

Fly Fishing Tips - Fly Selection

Match the Hatch..... with a good presentation!

Better Fly FishingA very obvious fly fishing tip is to try to use the right fly! Matching the hatch is the term that has been used for many years to emphasixe the proper fly selection. Of course this is assuming there is a hatch going on! Generally a hatch is referring to a significant amount of aquatic insects being hatched at once. This may be caused by any of the hundreds of types of mayflies or caddis flies. Mayflies and caddis flies are two of the most popular and common trout foods. With a bit of observation a good imitation can be selected. There is no need to go to the extremes that some anglers adopt. You do NOT have to learn latin or pump a fishes stomach (they hate that!). It does help to know the difference between a mayfly and a caddis fly. Simply analysis the general size color and shape of the natural insects and get your fly on the water and select a reasonable match. Having a proper presentation and a drag free drift of your fly is usually the most important factor.

Fly Fishing Tips - Sneak up on Trout!

Approach with Caution

Better fly fishingTrout are a very vary fish and they can be easily spooked. Depending on the specific conditions and the type of trout, the need for for a sleathly approach can be extreme. In low or slow or clear water a trout may sense your approach well before you get ready to cast. At times fish can feel you vibrations as you walk along the bank of a small stream. They will dash away for cover and not be feeding again for some time. Brown trout, particulary larger ones, are often very shy and hard to fish for. In some locations the large brown trout feed mostly at night. Cutthroat trout are not as sensitive and also tend to not be as selective as brookies, browns and rainbows. In any case it is always best to approach the fishing area with caution. This means move slowly, do not make loud noises and do not allow your shadow to fall on the water if possible. When you are fishing a small trout stream the correct approach may actually be on your hands and kness! Standing on a large rock can often spook trout with your shadow so that is generally not a good idea. Sneak up on those trout if you want to fool them!.
