An Elusive Skill - To Successfully Do A Fly Rod Cast

The only thing connected to the fly fishing rod is your hand so if the line doesn't go where you want it to it's because you didn't do a fly rod cast correctly.

Once you learn how to do a fly rod cast smoothy and accurately you will have much more chance of getting a fish on the other end of the line which is probably why you spend hours standing thigh deep in freezing cold water.

None of us are too old to learn a thing or two. Visit Read-Up-On.com/How-To-Fly-Cast for more information on improving your own fly casting technique.

The Basics Of A Fly Rod Cast

Fly fishing really should be called fly casting

For every fish hooked, there can be an awful lot of casting. Right at the start I'd like to emphasize that learning the basics of fly casting is very important. You should practice them until you can cast a line exactly where you want to. Only then can you move on to more exotic techniques.

Fly fishermen don't have the luxury of baiting their hook and waiting for a fish to grab it. For them it's cast and cast again until the fish goes for the fly. If you haven't learned to cast well it could be some time before you enjoy that fish supper.

By far the biggest mistake when learning to cast, is the false belief, and practice, that applying more strength to the cast will throw the line further.

Even if you consider yourself an old hand at fly casting you should still visit Read-Up-On.com/How-To-Fly-Cast to see if you can brush up on your fly casting method.

The First Steps In Making A Fly Rod Cast

A cast is really two casts - the backward and then the forward cast

To make a successful cast you have to start to think of the backward cast and the forward cast as two separate actions.

To begin the backward cast the rod must be loaded. What does that mean? You can think of the rod as like a bow. As you draw the rod back it bends, loading it with energy. The more you can load the rod during the backcast the more the rod will contribute to the forward cast sending the fly across the water.

So moving back to a rod, the more you can load a rod on the backcast the more the rod will contribute to sending the fly-line or lure on its way across the water.

It is the inertia of the line that allows you to load the rod during the backcast and when the line flys back behind the rod and you start to move forward, inertia once again forces the rod to bend once again to complete the cast.

The real way to learn the techniques is to watch an expert perform them and they try to copy his movements. Visit Read-Up-On.com/How-To-Fly-Cast for details of online videos showing the process in detail.

Acceleration In A Fly Rod Cast

Start slowly, get quicker and stop dead

Once you have made the backcast and you begin to move the rod forward you should acclerate the movement. You start to move your arm slowly and increase the speed as you follow through with the cast.

The rod tip must move at an ever increasing rate and if you manage this, as the rod unloads and straightens, the fly will travel to where you want it.

Dont forget the rule of the fly rod cast that where the rod tip goes the line will go. As you are accelerating the tip forward you must then STOP. That means stop dead. Not slow down to a stop. The forward movement of your arm and hand must suddenly stop dead.

Your wrist should be locked and firm during the complete cast with your thumb pointing up the rod. Just before you wish to stop the rod you must apply a sharp, quick snap of the wrist to bring the rod to a complete stop.

It is complicated enough to explain let alone perfect. It took me many years before I really felt that I had it under control and I did appreciate the explanations given at Read-Up-On.com/How-To-Fly-Cast even after years of practice.
