Fly Tying

There is no better feeling than catching a trout on a fly rod. Well the only thing better than that is to catch a trout on a fly rod using a fly that you tied yourself. We will introduce you to some very effective fly patterns that I have used during my many years as a fly fisherman.

The First Fly You Should Ever Tie

The Griffiths Gnat

Griffiths GnatThis simple fly is very effective. I fished it successfully year after year and I especially like using it during an evening hatch. In fact my 9 year old daughter started to tie flies this winter and this was the first fly she mastered. It allows you to develop some simple techniques and at the same time you get a fly that will catch fish.

Before you begin you will need these materials:

A fly tying vise ( pretty obvious I know but I felt obliged to mention it)
Dry fly hooks size 16-14 (if you are new to fly tying you may want to consider size 12)
Peacock Hurl
Grizzly Hackle

You could also you some gold/silver tinsel

To tie a Griffith's Gnat follow these instructions.

Attach thread to hook shank and create a thread base until you are about at the point of the hook

Tie in Grizzly Hackle first and then tie in a healthy piece of Peacock Hurl

Bring thread back up the shank and stop just short of the eye of the hook

Gently wrap the Peacock towards the eye (it is pretty fragile stuff so be careful) and tie off with thread

Optional: If you wanted to add some flash this is where you would add the tinsel

Take some hackle pliers (if you have them, if not it's not a big deal) and wrap the hackle feather the same way you did the hurl and tie off just short of the eye.

Tie off with a few half hitches and add head cement and voila! You have a proven fly for catching trout.

My Mom used to tie flies at home for a business, I loved watching her and did a few myself.

I would love to get into fly fishing. And, of course, once that obsession grabs me, I will want to tie my own flies. The obsession grows (at least in my mind for now). Interesting lens. Thanks!
