U.S. Flying Eagle Cent (1856-1858)
The U.S. Flying Eagle one cent coin was produced by the United States Mint in Philadelphia for general circulation for a two year span from 1857 to 1858. They became the start of what to is referred to as America's small cents coinage replacing the U.S. large cent coins.
Flying Eagle cents minted in 1856 were issued as pattern coins for government officials and not released for general circulation, making the number of coins available to collectors limited. It is estimated that the number of the 1856 coins was around 1500 to 2000 coins total. Difficulties in the minting process due to the coins design caused the Flying Eagle cents to be replaced by the Indian Head penny.
In 1858, there were to different varieties produced on the obverse of the coin a "large letter" and "small letter". An easy way to tell the difference between large letter and small letter varieties is to look at the word 'America'. In the large letter variety, the letters A and M are joined, where as in the small letter they are not.
