Flying First Class: Hyp or Hyper Great?

The Mystic of First Class

Someone once asked Ghandi why he always travels Third Class. He replied, "Because they don't have fourth class". How Ghandi of him. And I really approve. Really I do. Except of course, when I am walking past those first class passengers going to my coach seat. Then I just feel inferior. Well, envious might be a better word, and superior is definitely the word when talking about the 55 minute flight from Raleigh the Newark I mean really, who spends in the neighborhood of about $1000 to get a bigger seat for 55 minutes? I mean really..., but I digress.

So I finally decided to find out what the deal is. I had a conference to go to, in Las Vegas, and wasn't happy about that anyway. Plus I was flying from 7 o'clock EST to 12 o'clock (3 am my time) and then Midnight to 10 am coming home. Sounded like a great time to be as comfortable as possible.

I am saving my FF miles for trips to Australia and New Zealand as there is no way that I am flying 26 plus hours in coach, no, not me. Let Ghandi do that.

But I decided to use some miles to do the first class thing. It cost me 30,000 miles and $150. (15,000 each way and $75).

It was American Airlines and here is what happened. Decide if you think it was worth it.

"Successful People" vs "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves

I think this guy gets the feeling down, and he's funny too! Watch it before you read on, enjoy it, and tell us if you see it the same way. I hate to admit it, but this is a part of what I feel.

The First Leg of the Journey

If You Haven't Seen the Video Above, Go Back and See It

The three words that best describe my experience are anticipation and self consciousness.

I had been looking forward to this for a while, I must admit. I was a geek.

I forgot about the separate check in that 'they' er, 'we' have. But that was the first thing that hit me. There were two men already there trying to solve a problem and it annoyed me. I mean, I was flying first class and shouldn't have to be annoyed like that, right? My goodness, was it changing me already?

I didn't notice the red carpet (insert eye roll here) until I was leaving. The carpet was turned over and a guy tripped on it. Well, not all the bennies are good. Those coach folks didn't have to worry about that. I fixed it with my foot as I left.

There is no special gate for First Class people to go through security. You still have to take off your shoes and unpack your computer and pay for WiFi. Phooey. You still have to sit in the uncomfortable chairs in the waiting area, unless you pay more for the Admiral's Club. I was flying American and don't know about the others, but bet it is the same.

I was getting very self conscious. Who was first class and who wasn't. I mean I was making myself a little annoyed with myself, but it couldn't be helped. I did feel something when I was able to board first and sit in the front watching the others pass by. Of course, all I was doing was the other side of the coin from how I felt walking by first class. (See the above video)

Yes, folks, the seat aren't just bigger, they are more comfortable. There is a huge arm rest that can be used as a shared table. I was on the isle and a big man needed to get through to sit next to the window. Had this been coach I would have had to unbuckle (with a little person even) and get up. Not in First Class. There is so much leg room that I didn't have to move. That was nice.

I have seen them offer drinks before take off from coach and they did it here. Nice. In First Class you don't really have to wait your turn. There are only 16 people there and often 2 attendants. Sweet. I didn't know if it included alcohol and didn't want to ask, so I just got a coach. I didn't want to look like I wasn't really one of 'them'.

The ticket said dinner and that is what we got. It was really good. Roast chicken breast, not tough, with a lobster sauce. Very, very good. We also got some wine.

The seats went back a whole lot further than coach. Ever see Ellen De Generes talk about coach seats? She has it down and again, its funny, except when you are in the seats, then not so much. Watch and enjoy. But there is no foot rest. I mean buses and trains have footrests. I could never understand why they couldn't do this even in coach, but they don't do it, even in first class. At least in domestic planes, for American.

I had injured by left hand in a crocheting accident (that's another story, but I have a gorgeous new granddaughter) and the attendant was very helpful getting me ice packs that she devised. Yes, they are helpful in coach too, but not like that.

And of course, we were the first off the plane.

Second leg: I changed planes in Dallas and again, nothing special in the airports. You ride the shuttle just like everyone else. Not a bad system, but don't they realize that I was "First Class'?

First on, of course, but we didn't get the pretakeoff drink. Not that I needed it. The ticket said snack, but I have no idea if it was served. It was midnight my time and I was landing at 3 am my time and it would be 4 before I was in a bed. I was out like a light the minute I could put that beautiful seat back to a decent recline.

BTW, the picture above is pretty much what I was in in all four legs of my journey.

Ellen Tells the Inconvenient Truth About Coach Seats

There really is a difference in First Class seats. But they still don't have foot rests, what's with that?

Las Vegas to Raleigh

The Las Vegas Airport is a weird place. Its dingy, except for all those huge signs trying to entice you into seeing Holly Madison and Penn and Teller and of course the slot machines that are everywhere. The slot machines were plentiful, but not used. I wondered if there were fewer if they would be more attractive. But I digress...

First on again, and really, really liking that. The seat was one where the back didn't just go down, but the whole seat titled slightly so that your bottom goes up a little. But still no foot rest. The safety video said to make sure that your foot rest was down before takeoff, so I asked the man next to me, who clearly was not a newbee. We both looked and couldn't find one.

Now, they were supposed to serve a snack on the Dallas to Las Vegas leg, but I don't think they did. But I couldn't tell you if they served the promised snack here as it was 3 am my time and I think I was asleep before I entered the plane. I do know that there was no pretakeoff drink. I slept dead the whole flight and was so out of it I don't even know if I was more comfortable.

6 am in Chicago I passed the Admiral lounge on the way to my gate. There were comfortable chairs and an attendant. I has a fantasy of sleeping for 90 minutes and being gently wakened in time to board my plane first. I actually stopped at a counter and asked. It does not come with the $1000 for First Class. There is a separate fee for that. Bummer.

I am getting very used to the boarding first thing, and yes, I am getting full of myself. We did get a preflight drink here, and the man across the isle got a Bloody Mary, well three actually, which answered my question about that. I would have gotten a beer, but it was 7:30 in the morning. Not me, not then.

There was no food at all, though. The ticket didn't mention any, but wouldn't a two hour flight from 7:30 am to 10:00 am (90 minutes) at least call for a Continental Breakfast, if not eggs? But nothing but drinks and a ginger cookie. Oh well.

And then the landing in Raleigh, off first, but back with the peasants, my real people.

How About You?

I say domestic because I think it is a lot more fancy going overseas and the foreign airlines really know how to take care of people.

What Do You Think About First Class Travel?

I worked for a UK company that had a US investor. He booked four economy seats and used them as a bed for trans atlantic flights.

The front of the plane takes too much of the impact in an accident. I prefer to sit at the emergency exit!

Oh my goodness! I'm too much of a misfit in all occasions, coach or anywhere else, to feel self-conscious in first class... that sounds like it would take all the fun out of it!

If you ever do it again, take a page from some of those little old ladies who will just do whatever they do and not worry if they're frumpy or whatever it is your personal demon tells you.

I was very lucky coming back from Greece. VERY lucky. I have had many plane disasters, or I would be superstitious about this, but I was due this one time. A man whose wife should marry him twice explained to me that somehow their tickets had been mixed up, so they had one first class and one coach, and he wanted to sit back with her in coach, and I was sitting next to her, so would I like his first class seat?

On a transatlantic flight. About EIGHT HOURS.

Holy squee on a pogo stick, yes. So I snuggled down in my first class seat and enjoyed having room and a little video game console and friendly stewardesses bringing me tea and a blankie, and felt very happy and snug and enjoyed absolutely as much as I could, since I won't get a chance very often.

I might use frequent flyer miles for it again someday. For me, it's mostly not having to fight with an armrest, and being able to stretch and move a bit. I have arthritis.

I am not a fancy person and usually don't worry about it. But come to think I had something of the same experience as you did when I tried to get a gym membership in California -- everyone in the gym looked rich and immaculate and color coordinated in their fancy spandex and perfect bodies, and here I was a hobbit, so I ran away!

Luxury, though. The apples of luxury land rather haphazardly. Seize them when you can, and just recall they're a windfall, and that it doesn't make you any different... if it does, drop the apple quick!

Margo you always crack me up. I would love to try first class myself sometime.. I would definitely LOVE to do as you would for that trip to Australia... then, it would really mean something... 26hrs on a plane is crazy!!!!

I've flown first-class a couple of times and each time I do, it makes me want to do it more and more!

    With Love and Gratitude,
