Steps to take before taking your bird on a plane

  1. Call airline and find out if a) they allow you to take your bird in the cabin (not the cargo hold!) with you. and b) book a spot for your bird. it costs anywhere from $50-$100 each way, and just like human reservations, there are limited spots for pets on a plane. usually only one bird is allowed, for the entire plane, on one flight. so book early.
  2. Take bird to the vet. Ask about sedation options (highly unlikely), screaming issues on planes, breathing issues (are there any?), stress issues, and if it's okay for a bird to go through the security Xray machine.
  3. Get a cage ready at arrival destination.
  4. Buy a regulation-size bird carrier that can fit under your seat in the plane.
  5. Heavy blanket to cover the bird in flight.
  6. Ginger root for air sickness.
  7. Don't feed your bird a lot before the flight. Just give him some fresh fruit and seeds for the trip.
  8. # Request a hand-search for your bird carrier rather than allowing it to be inspected through the X-ray machine; If you must run the bird carrier through the X-ray machine, remove your parrot from the carrier

Continental's In-Cabin Pet Policy

We took our 1 year old sun conure, Pilot, on a flight from NYC to San Diego, on Continental.

He did BRILLIANTLY. And if you know sun conures, they are some noisy birds.

Pilot only squawked once in flight, and let me tell you, everyone on the plane turned to look at us :)

Here's Continental's In Cabin Pet Policy: http://www.continental.com/travel/policies/animals/in-cabin.asp

Continental allows domesticated cats, dogs, pet rabbits and household birds to be carried in the aircraft cabin on all U.S. domestic flights (except to/from Hawaii). An in-cabin pet may be carried in lieu of a carry-on bag and is subject to an $80.00 service charge each way ($160.00 for round trip travel). Pets can be booked online or by calling Continental reservations.

For International in-cabin pet acceptance and service charge information, contact our worldwide reservation office (in the U.S. 1-800-525-0280) for assistance.

Pets must be carried in an approved in-cabin kennel. The pet must be able to move comfortably in the kennel (stand up and turn around). The kennel must fit completely under the seat forward of the customer and remain there at all times aboard the aircraft.

Maximum dimensions are: 22" L x 14" W x 9" H (56 cm L x 36 cm W x 23 cm H).

In-cabin Pet Kennels are available for a $45.00 service charge. The dimensions are 17" L x 12.5" W x 8" H (43 cm L x 32 cm W x 20 cm H).

In-cabin pet restrictions:

* Only one pet per passenger is allowed in cabin.
* Only one pet is allowed in the First or BusinessFirst cabin (see below for exception on Boeing 777/767 aircraft) and four pets in Economy.
* No in-cabin pets are allowed in the BusinessFirst cabins of Boeing 777 aircraft with the exception of service animals.
* Only soft-sided kennels will be accepted on Boeing 767 aircraft in the BusinessFirst cabins. The kennel must not exceed 16" L x 12" W x 8.75" H (40 cm L x 30.5 cm W x 22 cm H) and must fit underneath the seat.
* Pets must be carried in an approved in-cabin kennel. The pet must be able to move comfortably in the kennel (stand up and turn around). The kennel must fit completely under the seat forward of the customer and remain there at all times aboard the aircraft.

* Customer is responsible to determine and comply with all state entry requirements which may apply.

and check out this sweet new Animoto module.

Here's a little Animoto slideshow I put together. Starring my sun conure Pilot. Taking a bath. Naked. Don't worry, it's TSFW. (Totally Safe for Work). He's a bird, remember. He doesn't need clothes.
