As I have said there are a number of types of folding bed. The traditional folding bed is constructed of a strong metal frame that folds in two so that it can be stored away unobtrusively when not in use. It usually comes with a mattress to afford its user a comfortable nights sleep. All you need is some bed linen and you're done.

If you are short on space this type of bed is ideal for use as a guest bed or even for young children. If you have a small room that you need two or more kids to share, the obvious answer may be bunk beds. If the kids are two young to manage the climb into a bunk bed, then a folding bed could be the ideal solution. It can be folded away during the day, leaving space for the kids to play in the room. It is also an affordable option to be considered if you are just looking for an interim solution until the kids are big enough for bunk beds.

Wall beds and sofa beds are a more modern interpretation of the folding bed. The wall beds is an excellent choice, if you want to use one room as an office and a bedroom or even a guest room. The wall bed will fold up neatly to the wall, out of sight (and mind!) when you don't need it or when you want use the space for another function. They can also be perfect if you have a studio apartment and you want to have a livingroom that looks like a living room and not a mish-mash bedroom/livingroom/office etc.

A sofa bed is also a good alternative for a studio apartment, but if you are planning on sleeping on the sofa bed on a regular basis make sure you check the specifications of the product and it is suitable for constant use. Some sofa beds will be specified for occasional use and these options are perfect if you want to use the bed element for guests.

Now I know you hardened outdoors types will be horrified at the thought of bringing a folding bed on a camping trip. We know you prefer to sleep close to the earth, but for some just being outdoors is close enough to nature. Why not have the best of both worlds and bring a folding bed to sleep on. You will enjoy your trip all the more if you have had a comfortable nights sleep. A folding bed might be just the thing to change the mind of a partner reluctant to embark on a camping trip with you! There are a number of options available and if you can park close to your campsite, I would advise choosing the most comfortable bed available!

I am including this story for your amusement, but please bear in mind that the folding bed to which I refer was from the 1970's and design and technology has come a long way since then! You see we live in a small seaside town and my Mom is originally from the city. Her siblings had quite a few kids. Back in the 70's and 80's when the economy was a bit like it is to-day, my cousins' annual vacation was a trip to visit us. Now there was little co-ordination involved with who was coming when, so sometimes we were overrun with family members. This meant that you had to be quick to grab a bed space - otherwise you got a sleeping bag and some floor space.

We had one folding bed - more of an old fashioned sun bed really. Now it was more comfortable than sleeping on the floor - that is if you managed to get into it without it folding up unexpectedly! You see if you didn't sit precisely in the middle of the bed, it would just fold and you ended up being the meat in the sandwich! As you can imagine, there was quite a lot of laughter in our house at bedtime, particularly when an unsuspecting newcomer was assigned the folding bed. It may have been temperamental, but if you did manage to get into it okay it was a comfortable sleeping space. Oh the fond memories! Folding beds have come a long way and so have we!
