I love this lens. So much information. I remember the surge of interest in Folk music in the UK in the 60s. I was a teenager in the 1950s at the height of the UK Skiffle craze. Skiffle was based almost entirely on American folk songs with a tinge of jazz and country. I write about those days now.

Great lens. My friends mom used to sing folk music, she would put on a "concert" for all of the kids in the neighborhood, it was great!

I love folk music. My favorite group is the Kingston TRio, probably because my parents used to play them in the house when I was growing up. Although I've heard him mentioned for years, I just started listening to Pete Seeger.

As a music educator in a public elementary school, I use authentic folk songs as the basis of my pedagogy. I am constantly looking for authentic sources, both written and recorded, so I can present the most authentic version of a folk song possible. In fact, I ran across this site in a search for a source and origin of a song.

You may want to look into other Kodaly music educators and their publication, as we are doing our part keeping the folk songs alive.

I really, really enjoyed reading through this lens! I grew up listening to folk music, including my dad playing guitar and singing songs out of "Sing Out" magazine. Thanks for lensrolling my Judy Collins/Joan Baez lens to your lens. I'll do the same -- but first I'm off to look at a few more of your folk lenses :-)

You've really got some extensive resources to learn about folk music. Thanks! I like rock a lot too, but have been a Peter, Paul & Mary fan since I was a child and saw them in concert in the '90s. On current folk music, please check out David Wilcox (an American folk singer who's been around since the 80's and is still putting out new material). He's one of my favorites and is a very talented guitarist.

"Folk music was music that had something to say..." - that's real music - unlike so many of the commercial songs today that lack passion, produced simply for profit.

I love American Folk Music. Lensrolling to my lens about The Brothers Four and also Morning Has Broken.
