About the Folland Gnat

The Folland Gnat was a fighter aircraft renowned for its manouverability. Designed in the nineteen fifties it was built as a private project to create a low tech light weight fighter which could be built in less industrialised nations. It was often used as a trainer but saw action around the world, notably in the India-Pakistan war where it earned the nickname "Sabre Slayer" for its success against the technically superior Sabre fighter.

In the RAF it stood out as the aircraft of choice for the Yellowjacket display team and their successors the Red Arrows.

The Folland Gnat was created in the fifties to fulfil a post-war need for a low tech, easiy constructed fighter for less industrialised nations. The first of a class of aircraft its designer called "light fighters" the idea was to strip the aircraft down to the basics, with no space for extras and reduced fuel. This made it cheap to produce, but limited it to day operations and restricted its range.

To save space many systems doubled up - the undercarriage was linked to airbrakes for example. This, along with its cramped size, made maintenance difficult and gave it reliability issues. However, its high performance, excellent manoverability and low production cost made it a favourite both with pilots and many airforces around the world.

(There were also some interesting rumours about the Gnat - one stated that due to small size there were plans to sling three Gnats against the underside of a Vulcan and then release them in combat zones to resolve their fuel issues. One wonders how the Gnat pilots were supposed to get home...)

A Gnat, Six F-86's and a Gallantry award

The Indian Air Force used Gnats on the front line. Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon earned India's highest Gallantry award when he was killed while single-handedly holding off an attack by seven F-86's against his air base. The F-86's were successfully repelled.

The Folland Gnats were the aircraft chosen for the Red Arrows, due to size, speed and manoverability. Due to their small size the Gnat was less expensive to operate than the contemporary RAF fighters, but was serving on the front line in many other airforces around the world.

In 1979 the Red Arrows switched to using BAe Hawks, and the Gnats were retired.
