How To Find Interesting Twitter People

Getting started on Twitter can be daunting - how do you find people who share your interests ? This page will give suggestions to help you find interesting people to follow, and also try out my (hopefully!) clever idea to try and make it easier in future.

Twitter will give you a few ideas when you sign up, so I'm assuming you've already found or invited a few of your own friends or colleagues.

Where else can we find people we know, then ? This page lists several methods I've found useful, but first please sign up to a few Interested In accounts. We need lots of followers to each account to make it useful. There's only a few at the moment, please join in !

If you think this is a good idea and would like to help it succeed, please link to this page on your blog, Facebook page or retweet the tweet and tell all your friends about it :-)

Thanks, and I hope you find the page useful.

TwitDir

Find out who everyone else is following

Check out TwitDir. There are links at the top page for "Top 100 Followed", "Top 100 Updaters" etc. Find out who everyone else is following, and take a look at their tweets and profiles to see if you want to too. Be careful - the Top 100 post regularly and often, so don't subscribe to too many at once, or you'll be flooded with messages.

Twitter Search

Use keywords to find people

Twitter Search is a great way to find people - just type some interesting keywords and see who comes up. Check out the Advanced options for more effective searches - for example "cool filter:links" will give you only tweets with links in them that people said are cool. Or search for "@ianshepherd" to see all the recent replies to me.

Twitter Packs

Wiki lists of people, grouped by interest

Take a look at this page:

Twitter Packs by Topic

Scroll down, looking for things you're interested in. When you find something, look for the lists of Twitter users - and click on any you find interesting. If you like the look of their stream, follow them.

Going one stage further, this page is a wiki - if you're that way inclined, go ahead an edit it to add yourself to categories you'd like people to find you in.

Follow people the people you follow, follow

OK I know that sounds confusing...

...but it really isn't. Let's say you follow @ianshepherd - that's me. If you find my tweets interesting, check out the people I follow - there's a good chance you'll find them interesting too. Try the same with other people you've found.

Follow people who the people you follow, talk to

Also not confusing !

One of the problems with looking through other people's "Follow lists" is that you quickly get overwhelmed. When someone follws more than a hundred (or a thousand !) people, where do you start ? My suggestion is -

Follow whoever they talk to. Meaning, whoever they reply to. Those are likely to be people who share their interests.

So, click on one of the people you follow's name to see their Twitter stream, and look for the @ replies. If you see a tweet that looks interesting, click on the name of the person they've replied to, in order to see their stream. If it looks interesting, follow them! (You can always un-follow afterwards) If not, go back to your first "interesting person" and try someone else they reply to.

I find this method has a pretty high success rate, and often you can find "gold mine" people you're already following, who are talking to lots of people you want to follow, too.

Twubble

Get the hard work done for you

Twubble searches through all the people you're currently following, looks at who they are following and adds them up. Then it gives you a list of the most followed people, who you can check out and perhaps follow yourself.

Why didn't I mention this first ? Because it only works when you are already following some people, and it only really works if the people you are already following have some common interests with you. Choosing someone "by hand" will still give you a better targeted result.

Follow "Interested In" accounts

Go on, give it a shot...

The Idea

I'm creating lots of new "Interested In" Twitter accounts, each starting with tw_. For example, @tw_music, @tw_music_biz, @tw_film_tv etc.

The idea is you just choose the ones you're interested in, and follow them.

That's it.

What's The Point ?

The idea is that you can easily find people who share you interests, just by checking out who follows each account. If you're interested in Music, look at the followers of @tw_music, and choose a few to follow. If you're interested in food, follow @tw_food and so on.

And...

That's it ! Hopefully over time many people will join in, creating a really easy-to-use method of finding people to follow. If the idea is a success, the accounts can become very specialised - eg. @tw_music_techno_underworld, say. You could even choose to follow one of these accounts and use Twubble on it.

Start following now and let's see if it works !

I'll be adding new accounts all the time, please send suggestions to @follow_people. Thanks !

Choose your interests and follow them here

These are the "Interested In..." accounts you can choose to follow so far

@tw_music
@tw_music_biz
@tw_film_tv
@tw_social_media
@tw_books
@tw_environment
@tw_wine
@tw_food
@tw_art

More coming soon...

Will this idea work ?

Is the idea above any good ? Will it make it easier to find people with common interests on Twiiter ?
