How to get an Angel Blessing

Ranked #926 in Squidoo Community, #112,942 overall

Does your lens have what it takes?

Not every lens on Squidoo has what it takes to get an Angel Blessing. That's what makes an Angel Blessing so special. When you get one, you can be sure that you have a top notch lens. If you aren't receiving as many blessings as you'd like, there may be a reason. You see, Angels look for certain things when looking for lenses to bless. Sure, every Angel has their own likes and dislikes, their own style of blessing, but there are certain things that we all tend to look for.

How to get a blessing from a Squidoo Angel!

Here's a couple of things we look for

Original content

A lens that is copy and pasted from another article will most likely not get blessed. This includes articles that come from free article websites, PLR articles and "spun" articles. Anything that you didn't personally write is most likely not original content.

Here are a couple lenses that outline exactly what plagiarism is.

Credit your photos

If you don't use your own photos (we've all been there), then you need to make sure the photos you use are all licensed under Creative Content and you need to leave a link back to the photo.

Here is a lens explaining all about Creative Content photos, where to get them, and how to link back to them.

Change default module titles

A lot of people leave the default module titles on their guest books, Amazon modules and Ebay modules. To most, that just looks tacky. Instead, why don't you title the guest book with a question pertaining to your lens? You could use the titles on Amazon and Ebay modules to introduce your product.

Here is a lens with some great ideas for guest book titles. I've used a few myself and they definitely work!

Categorize correctly

This is a subject of much discussion amongst SquidAngels. Should we or should we not bless a lens that is clearly in the wrong category? Some say yes; some say no. To be safe you should always make sure your lens is in the right category. I know there isn't a sub-sub topic for every lens. In fact, some lenses don't even fit into a sub-topic. And that's okay, as long as your lens is in the right main topic.

If you are somewhat confused by the topics, sub-topics and sub-sub-topics, here are a couple lenses to help you out. The first gives a good explanation on how to categorize your lens, plus there's a link to a complete list of topics.
The second lens is a complete list of topics set up in a way that's easy to understand.

Add a bio

Adding a bio is one of the first things a squid should do, even before building a first lens. No one want to see "Hello world. This is my bio. I can edit later". We want to see a picture of you (or something you've chosen to represent you). We want to know who you are. What are your interests? What's your favorite thing to write about? Is there something that makes you extra qualified to write about certain subjects? Who are you?

This lens offers some great advice on how to spruce up your bio, plus a few extra tips on how to get found on Squidoo.

Make sure your products fit your lens

It's common to use the selling modules on Squidoo. Heck, that's how you make the most money. But nobody is going to buy a dog leash off a lens about the music group "Three Dog Night". Unfortunately, if you set your modules to allow Amazon or Ebay to pick your products for you, that's the kind of results you'll end up with. So it's best to always pick your own products and make sure they are on the same subject as your lens.

These lenses will teach you everything you want to know about the Ebay and Amazon modules.

Add more!

There's nothing I hate worse than a bare bones lens. Add something! Squidoo has over 200 modules for you to choose from. So after using your favorites, search out and add a couple more. Something I personally love is an interactive lens. Lenses with polls, quizzes, and multiple guestbooks asking my opinion (because I love to give my opinion) keep my attention.

Don't understand how to use the other modules? These lenses can help with that!

A few more things

to make your lenses the best they can be!

Angels, if you want to add anything, go ahead. I'd like to add some featured comments above about what other Angels look for in a bless-worthy lens, so please let me know if I forgot something (chances are, I did), or if there is something special you look for. Please be as specific as possible. Thanks!

Grammar and Spelling

I'm not saying your lenses have to be perfect. I know it's hard to catch spelling and grammar errors when it's something we write ourself. So I'll usually look over a few misspellings, but if a lens is riddled with them, I just can't bless it. I also understand grammar errors, especially when English isn't your first language. But if there are so many errors that I can't understand the lens, I won't bless it.4 points

Check your code

It's okay to add a small amount of HTML or CSS to a lens, but always check your code afterwards to make sure it's working. And if you have a link you want to share, don't just write "http.www.link.com". It looks messy. Using HTML will make your lens a lot cleaner and more professional looking. If you don't know how to use HTML, you can visit Squidoo Helper Lenses for a large list of lenses that will help you to learn all about HTML, CSS and more.3 points

Make it Personal

I love personal stories. Whether I'm reading a product lens, an information lens, a review lens, a recipe lens, or any other kind of lens, a personal story can sometimes be the deciding factor for a blessing.
Why? Because I know your personal story is the one thing I can't get anywhere else.
I'm not saying I only bless lenses with personal stories (not every lens needs a personal story) but it certainly couldn't hurt anything (unless your personal story is insanely boring).1 point

Visit the Forum

The SquidU forum is a great place to hang out if you have a few extra minutes. There are so many perks! You can get your lens critiqued and maybe get some ideas on how to make it better. You can ask for help if you have a question about anything at all. You can show off your lens in the Lens Spotlight. You can chat with other lensmasters about the different aspects of Squidoo. You can learn tips and tricks on how to sell stuff. You can participate in forum challenges (currently a fun game of Lens Jenga). You can even chat about stuff completely unrelated to Squidoo. And while you're doing all this, you'll be making friends and getting known.
Here are a few things to remember while you're there:

  • Do add a photo of yourself on the forum. I, for one, remember pictures a lot easier than names.

  • Do add links to your lenses in your forum signature. That way we have something to click if we want to get to know you.

  • Do join in on any discussions that interest you. Don't be shy!

  • Do read the rules of the forum. HQ is very serious about the forum rules and breaking them can get you banned.

  • Do be a role model. You may be a newbie right now, but someday you'll be a Giant Squid. You might even be a Squid Angel.

  • Don't link drop. This means don't add a link in every post. Most of the time, the only links you see are in the Critique Me or in the Lens Spotlight. There are exceptions, but not often.

  • Don't link to sites outside Squidoo unless it's your personal blog. Most lensmasters look at outside links like they're spam.

  • Don't ask for blessings or squidlikes. Asking for either of these is against TOS. Just be patient and active and you will get the blessings and squidlikes you deserve.

What do other Angels look for?

I'm not the only Angel that wants to help you make your lenses better. There are many that have built lenses outlining what they look for in a bless-worthy lens.

Angels, if you have a lens that explains what you look for, let me know below and I'll feature it here.

Leave a comment and maybe I'll sprinkle my Angel Dust on YOU!

This is one more thing you can do to get a blessing. Sometimes, even with fantastic lenses, you don't get blessings because we don't know you're here. So go out and explore Squidoo. "Like" the lenses that you like. Comment on a lens when you have something to say. Visit a few guestbooks to let other lensmasters know that you appreciate their writing. Visit the forum and give us a chat. Don't be shy about posting. Just make sure not to leave any spam in your trail. If you're unsure about what spam is, here's a lens about Squid Ettiquette.

Remember, let me know you were here!

This is a very helpful lens, not just for increasing our chances at getting lenses blessed, but for writing good lenses in general. Thank you so much for the resources you have linked to. That is very helpful!
