Food Stamps Should Not Pay For Junk Food

HERE'S WHAT I THINK

Food Stamps Should Not Pay for Junk Food

Food stamps should NOT pay for junk food! EBT money should go toward nutritious food from the four food groups, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and meat--not sugar- and fat-laden goodies such as potato chips, donuts, candy bars, coca-colas, and energy drinks.

The goverment should NOT support bad nutrition through its food stamp program; they carry the responsibility of ensuring that food stamp money is distributed in a way where it can do the most good--and that means wholesome, nutritious food--essential for everyone, especially growing children.

From a Cashier's Viewpoint

In my job as a cashier, I have observed a substantial increase in food stamp use. Many people in the area I work in have lost their jobs due to cut backs and business closings. Many of our businesses have, unfortunately, been sent overseas. Some of these businesses, which were once strongly promoted in my store are: Magic Chef, Springs, and Werner. I assist many customers who are using food stamps for the first time (due to the loss of their jobs) by showing them how to use their new food stamp (EBT) cards.

One thing that saddens me is the fact that so many sodas, candies, cakes, and other junk food treats are purchased with food stamps. I see many people with young children who, instead of buying milk and/or fruit juice, purchase sugary drinks instead, Top on the list are Cokes and other sodas. At the store where I work, EBT even pays for some energy drinks--go figure!

Instead of calorie-laden nutrition-devoid snacks such as candy, cakes, cookies, and potato chips, I would like to see more nutritious snack food items like fruit, whole grain crackers, low fat popcorn, nuts, yogurt, raisins, and cheese purchased with EBT. Instead of sodas, I would much rather see milk and fruit juice purchased. I think that what people buy with EBT should be better regulated in the interest of our children, and healthier, alternative snacks should be supported rather than food that offers little or no nutritional benefit.

During the past twenty years, obesity has been on the rise--in fact it is 25% or higher in 33 states! Obesity leads to health problems, a shortened life span, and a lowered quality of life. Obesity is epidemic, and we need to address it NOW! The goverment should definitely better regulate the items that food stamps can buy, and ban food that serves no nutritional purpose whatsoever from being purchased with food stamps.

Yes, you're right!

Buy something nutritious.

Leonidus says:

I am also a cashier and am disgusted at the abuse of EBT cards and govt. assistance. In many, even most cases, EBT card users waste their handouts on name brand junk foods, sugary sodas, candy and energy drinks. This is often right before they ask me for a carton of cigarettes which they finance with their own cash. It is appalling to think that the taxes I work to pay are supporting their poor nutritious choices.

JaguarJulie says:

I think food stamps shouldn't pay for junk food ... who would establish whether or not a food is considered "junk?"

Supplemental NUTRITION ASSISTANCE Program.

Dennis says:

maybe only a certain small percentage could be used on so called comfort foods. A diet should consist of nutritonal foods but everyone has to have a sweet every now and again.

Blonde_Blythe says:

Food stamps should only pay for nutritious food--so important for the health of our children.

No way, Monkeybrain!

JJNW says:

This is a tough call. It is hard to instantly change the way a family eats if they hit hard times. Another thought is that sometimes a food treat might be the only gift a child gets for a birthday or holiday during hard times. Also, that comfort food thing is a big issue. Financial difficulties are hard enough without using the government to teach people how they "should" eat, ya know?
