Organic Soil - Pure and Simple
The Foundation for a Perfect Organic Garden
To start gardening organically may be a bit daunting especially if you are worried about the soil you have in your garden. After years of gardening with pesticides and chemical fertilzers there is a possibility of residual contamination. This can be a problem because your soil's toxicity is determined by a number of factors.Factors Determining Soil Contamination
The level of contamination in your soil is affected by 4 elements
- The type of fertilizers and pesticides that have previously been used
- Properties of the soil - texture is determined by the proportions of sand, slit and clay
- Condition of the land - climate and depth to groundwater
- What pesticides and fertilizers have previously been used and in what quantities
As a general rule land should be free of synthetic chemicals for 3 or more years to be fully organic.
With the Food4Wealth system Jonathan will show you how to adapt your garden to grow your food organically, whether your soil is good or not. It will take a weekend to set up your new bed for growing and once in place will take approximately 8 hours a year to maintain. YES, ONLY 8 HOURS A YEAR!
Make the Most of Compost
How Organic Gardens Help the Environment
It is possible to buy good organic compost from a garden center if you are short on space or time, but the beauty of composting is the simplicity of transforming kitchen and garden scraps into the element that will ensure your success in your organic garden. All good gardener's start with excellent foundations - the better the soil, the better the produce.
What NOT to Use for Composting
For high quality compost avoid using the following in your compost bin.
- Diseased plants
- Grass clippings from a lawn that has been treated with chemicals
- Roots of perennial weeds
- Weeds that have gone to seed
- Meat scraps, fats or bones
Start making your own compost now, you don't even have to buy a bin. Find a sheltered spot in your garden that is away from too much direct sunlight - you don't want the pile to dry out, then start adding your kitchen and garden waste. Add the vegetation in even layers, no more than 3 or 4 inches thick, especially grass cuttings.
Consider investing in a rotating bin as this will speed up your results and rather than wait months for your compost it will be ready in a matter of weeks instead.
