Foods That Cause Heartburn

Eating healthier foods is always a great thing, but did you know that there are many healthy foods that cause heartburn and other stomach issues? If you are prone to that burning sensation rising from your chest up into your throat, put down the fork and consider a few foods that may be more painful than healthful.

Foods with a lot of strong acid or flavors are the worst things you can eat with a heartburn problem. Citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit are acid based foods that will not feel very well coming back up your throat the wrong way. Also, remember that drinking orange juice could be just as bad as eating the fresh fruit. This is not to say that you can never enjoy a piece of citrus fruit or a small glass of juice with your breakfast. Just limit your intake and avoid consuming citrus fruits on an empty stomach.

Tomatoes are a high acid food that will increase your chances of experiencing heartburn. They are a common health food, especially when you start eating more salads than red meat. Again, you do not have to completely eliminate tomatoes from your diet. Just watch to see if they are contributing to your heartburn problem and reduce your consumption if necessary.

If you are enjoying steamed vegetables or stir fry as a healthier dinner alternative, consider what you are using for flavor. Onions and garlic are commonly used when sautéing or making stir fry, but they can lead to heartburn as well.

While it may be hard to cut out all carbonated beverages from your diet, doing so could greatly reduce if not altogether eliminate the burn in your chest. Even if you have switched to calorie and sugar free varieties, the bubbly drinks will not be so heartburn friendly.

One common drink that may contribute to heartburn is coffee. It is the coffee itself not what you put in it, so cutting back on sugar is not going to help much. If you believe this is part of your heartburn problem, consider cutting back the amount you drink and taking in food along with it.

You don't necessarily have to cut common foods that cause heartburn completely out of your diet. What affects one person harshly will do nothing at all to someone else. Pay attention to what you are eating just before your heartburn sets in and you will know which foods or beverages to cut back on.
