Most people are aware of alternative fuels like Bio Diesel, LPG, Ethanol and Hydrogen...

But not many people are aware of Compressed Natural Gas.

A CNG vehicle is also able to be driven using petrol, Bio CNG, Hydrogen Blended CNG or even pure Hydrogen.

CNG is an environmentally friendly fuel.

The Carbon that is emitted from burning CNG are 20% lower than for petrol.

But for most people, the best advantage from using this fuel is the price.

Some people pay almost $100 for a tank of petrol.

Filling costs of $50, $60 or $70 are commonplace.

The oily truth is that the all the cheap easy oil has been used.

We are sliding into Peak Oil - and we could even be already there.

The other truth is that terrorism in the world is largely funded by oil money.

One of the biggest exporters of Terrorism in the world today is Iran.

But did you know that Iran is now close to having 2000 CNG service stations and over 2 million CNG vehicles ?

This means that Iran could block the strait of Hormuz and inflict massive economic damage on Western countries but suffer far less themselves because they no longer use petrol - they use CNG instead.

But Australian politicians, media and Oil companies are more interested in maintaining oil profits than they are about safeguarding you against economic terrorism.

Even if Australia decided to start a CNG revolution tomorrow - It would take at least 5 years to catch up to where Iran is with CNG today.

5 years is an awfully long time to suffer petrol shortages, economic disruption and sky high oil prices.

You see, CNG is an antidote to this looming crisis - but government cares more for the oil companies on this than they do on your well being. seem to care.

Indded, they seem to be in the pockets of the oil companies, remaining silent on this viable, cleaner and cheaper fuel.

Food prices are already rising because of rising oil prices.

But if cheaper CNG fuel was used instead - your food bill would be lower.

By reducing oil dependency we also start to relieve the economic pressures that it brings us..

Singapore recognised the risks of oil dependency in 2003 and introduced CNG fuel for motorists.

A CNG car is far cheaper than a Hybrid Camry and much cheaper than a $60,000 plus electric car.

The conversion costs about the same as an LPG conversion.

The savings rapidly pay back any money spent to on the fuel conversion or even on a home refueling pump.

AN ASPENDALE Gardens service station silling petrol for 50c a litre this Friday in a windfall for motorists.

OES CNG SmartGas is to promote the opening of a natural gas station, touted as Australia's first, on Wells Rd.

Manager Kevin Black said the event aimed highlited the price difference between petrol and CNG..

CNG will be sold for 72c a kilogram, equivalent to 50c a litre for petrol.

The Melbourne-based company, which plans to open another five service stations in Victoria this year.

Motorists can drop their car off at the station to have it converted to compressed natural gas, while it will also sell regular petrol and LPG.

Conversion costs about $4000, with the average payback period about 50,000km.

Mr Black said compressed natural gas produced fewer emissions was increasingly popular overseas and had a more stable pricing structure than petrol.

The station is on the corner of Wells and Langslow roads.

This reply to my letter to the energy ministers came to me in 2007.

TV advertisements in Thailand were advertising the 2007 CNG powered Hyundai Sonata to the Thai general public at the same time.

The politicians and media have plenty of resources - but they choose to remain silent on this issue.

To make matters worse - if you look carefully at the CNG Hyundai Sonata advertisement - the driver in the ad looks like he is an Australian .

Did you also know that of the 16 billion or so petrol excise that is raised by government - as much as $9 billion of this is returned to the oil industry either directly or indirectly as subsidies.

So don't be fooled by the precious Politician tax talk on fuel excise.
Instead we should put those subsidies towards a new CNG industry for Australia ?

Resource wars in past times were quite common.

Wars were fought over salt - a vital resource of the past.

But the when refrigeration was invented - salt was no longer an important resource.

New technology de-politicized this resource..

No one would fight a war over salt any more.

The first and second gulf wars were two oil wars that we fought in the past few decades -

But as oil supplies dwindle - the chances of another oil war becomes greater..

If we de-Politicising Oil - we reduce Geo Political Risk - and the chances of another oil war....

So we should change our transport fuel and introduce alternatives like CNG to reduces the risks of oil wars..

Australia has spend $30 billion to date on the war on terror - a conflict that is very much linked with our current oil dependency.

So isn't it a far better and far cheaper option to end the devastating expensive and wasteful oil wars and instead concentrate on securing a cleaner and safer transport fuel option for all Australians ?

So which country will soon have the largest number of CNG service Stations (over 2200)

It's Iran - The rogue nation that threatens to block the Strait of Hormuz, choking the world oil supply. But with CNG (and nuclear weapons) they will soon be in a position to blackmail others who are oil dependent - without being blackmailed themselves.

'Iran will lead world in CNG stations'

Iran says it will be the world leader in terms of the highest number of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations as well as in CNG consumption within the next four years.

Managing Director of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company Farid Ameri said that the record is expected to be set by the end of the country's Fifth Five-Year Development Plan in the year 2015.

He made the remarks at a conference on designing and building CNG stations on Wednesday, Iran's Oil Ministry website Shana reported.

Ameri also announced that Iran has planned to define standards on building and setting up CNG stations in cooperation with the private sector and scientific centers.

The Iranian official noted that the Islamic Republic succeeded to manufacture 35 percent of the CNG equipment domestically.

Iran needs to be self-sufficient on production of CNG machinery, not only to meet the country's domestic needs but also to export the tools, according to Ameri.

The Iranian government this week urged ministries of petroleum, energy, interior, trade, industries, and road and transportation to help expand CNG stations across the country.

Currently, there are 1,540 CNG stations operating in Iran, but the number is expected to increase to 2,188 over the next Iranian year, 1390, (starting March 21, 2011).

Iran's Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan is part of a 20-Year Outlook Plan (2005-2025), which serves as the country's main blueprint for long-term sustainable growth.

Four Five-Year Economic Development Plans have been implemented in the Islamic Republic over the past two decades.

Ironically, the leader of the "Axis of Terror" looks to the very same abundant national fuel source for economic stability and environmental improvement that America continues to shun.

Ironic indeed. For years, some of us in California have laughed whenever we see trucks full of tomatoes heading south on the interstate freeways, because within minutes we inevitably see another truck loaded with tomatoes heading north. You would think that the practical thing to do would be to just leave the tomatoes farmed in the south for those living in So Cal, and to leave those tomatoes farmed in the north for the northerners.

Perhaps there are good reasons for this shell game; maybe the tomatoes ripen better in the hot sun of a long I-5 ride. Maybe it's a way to jack-up the price of the produce by claiming higher transportation costs. Whatever, no one seems to know or have an answer.

There's a similar shell game going on in America with oil and CNG (compressed natural gas) that no one in a responsible position seems to be willing or able to explain.

On the one side, you have Iran, the number two OPEC oil producer, becoming the number one growing CNG market in the world; and on the other you have the United States, the world's largest user of gasoline with huge proven reserves of natural gas, virtually ignoring this domestic resource as an engine fuel.

According to information revealed at the 2nd CNG Conference and Exhibition on CNG and Related Industries, held July 26th and 27th in Tehran, Iran, there are now about 1.5 million natural gas vehicles on the road in Iran (total population estimate of 74 million). Comparatively, there are about 9 million NGV (natural gas vehicles) in use around the world. Of the approximate 1 million new vehicles sold in Iran in their last calendar year, nearly one-half are either fully natural gas powered or bi-fuel capable.

There are currently close to 900 CNG filling stations in Iran. Incidentally, the promotional slogan for the Iranian trade event was "CNG IS THE CLEAN AND GREEN FUEL OF CHOICE."

Conversely, in America (population estimate 305 million), we have only about 125,000 natural gas vehicles on the road, with roughly 1,200 CNG filling facilities across the country. The only automaker selling new CNG cars in the U.S. is Honda, and they produce a little more than 1,000 Civic GX per year.

If we had the same relative market penetration as Iran, we would have about 6 million clean or clearner burning cost-efficient CNG vehicles on the road today. If we sold the same proportion of new NGVs that Iran does we would have 20 to 30 million on the road by 2015. Keep in mind that President Obama's great dream is to have just 1 million electric vehicles on the road by 2015.

Remarkably, tiny Sweden, with a population of about 9.2 million, is now selling 700 new NGVs per year for use on their roads. That's not too much less than the entire Honda U.S. output. In Thailand, General Motors' local Chevrolet unit sold 1,060 CNG Optras in June 2009 alone (out of a total Optra sales output for June of 1,653 cars). Meanwhile, in Europe, Fiat recently announced that six of their models will be available in CNG-powered versions. Stories of CNG success and acceptance like these can be found around the world.

Why Iran and CNG? There are several reasons for the high reliance and acceptance of CNG in Iran, even though they are so oil rich. Primarily, these are concerns over domestic security and economic well-being.

While they have no shortage of the raw black goop, they have very few oil refineries. Consequently, Iran has to import the finished fuels from Europe and other countries, and pay for it in foreign currency. In an amazing turn-about-is-fair-play scenario, Iran could actually get cut off from the much needed engine gasoline fuel if the rest of the world ever decided to take Iran's anti-social behavior seriously.

CNG production doesn't require the same refining capabilities, so they can be energy self-sufficient while arrogantly concentrating on their next biggest export to the world, global terrorism.

In addition, Iran is subject to their own environmental crisis and is looking for ways to reduce pollution. That is certainly part of their reasoning.

The United States shares the same energy related issues that concern Iran: Security and economic well-being, and the environment. But where Iran sought a present visible solution, we went off in an entirely different direction, in fact no direction, and with blindfolds on.

Within the last decade the three America car companies all made CNG vehicles for sale in the U.S. Several foreign brands also sold CNG models in this country. An unfortunate change in government regulations de-incentivized GM, Ford, Chrysler and the others from continuing to do so and instead made it more profitable for them to make and sell large gasoline-guzzlers.

CNG-powered vehicles didn't just drop off the table-of-discussion here in America, it was erased from Detroit's collective memory bank%u2026 even though each of the Detroit Three continued (and continue to this day) to produce and sell CNG vehicles in other parts of the world.

Toyota further confused the issue earlier this year when they announced that they would be unveiling a concept CNG car at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. Astute journalists, such as Edwin Black author The Plan, were quick to ask Toyota why they would be presenting only a "concept CNG car," versus a production model, since they have already had considerable experience in producing and selling CNG vehicles around the world and in America. I seem to recall Edwin asking Toyota, "What more is there to prove?"

It's clear that many Americans want and need larger passenger vehicles, and because of the price tag of SUVs, it is more profitable for automakers to build them. What's not so clear is why someone in Detroit or Washington never had the vision to pair up SUVs, for example, with CNG power. A CNG V-8 engine is as capable of moving a bloated Cadillac Escalade or Hummer down the highway at 80 MPH as a gasoline V-8.

However it does so cheaper and with less harmful emissions.
As many have opined in a recent editorials about what the apparent success of the "Cash For Clunkers" program demonstrates; just imagine how successful the program would be if instead of the government spending billions to incentivize the upgrade of fuel-inefficient vehicles to only marginally better fuel efficient vehicles, consumers had the chance to move up to much more cost effective and efficient cars and trucks.

Is CNG upstaging electric? A few colleagues have suggested that the reason for Detroit and Washington's reluctance to re-introduce CNG-powered vehicles in America is because they don't want to let anything get in the way of "the electrification of America's roadways." The problem with this hypothesis is two-fold: Firstly, this electric-vision didn't stop the Detroit Three from making and selling CNG vehicles in the rest of the world.

Second, and even more important, unless there are some big surprises about to be revealed regarding pure-electric vehicle introductions, we may be waiting a long time for an electric rescue. I've heard disappointingly long predictions from a variety of sources during the last year or so, including Ford.

However, just two weeks ago PriceWaterhouseCoopers issued their analysis of an electric future and they concluded that we could be two decades away from electric passenger vehicles playing a significant role in solving our energy, transportation and environmental problems.

Even if the prediction is wrong by one decade, we can put a heck of a lot of CNG vehicles on the road between now and then.
In his report on the Iranian CNG expo, Brett Jarman (Executive Director of the International Association for Natural Gas Vehicles), wrote one of the most insightful comments I've ever heard regarding the reluctance to accept any alternative fuel:

"Lack of infrastructure is often touted as a 'reason' not to pursue natural gas as a transport fuel yet %u2026(this) is merely an excuse; that lack of infrastructure is solved simply by putting mechanisms in place that allow it to be created." I recall Edwin Black stating that when the "infrastructure" excuse is used, you know they are lying.

There's no new technology that has to be invented to put CNG to work in the U.S. There's nothing that hasn't already been tested and proved. For everyday that we delay in utilizing the most likely tool we have to end foreign oil addiction and oil-sponsored terrorism, we're one day closer to disaster.

The Sizzler supersonic missile - Oil dependency exposes us to these scary new dangers

The US navy has no defence against this supersonic missile. The Sizzler is a new weapon that could quickly bring supersonic $3 or $4 per litre petrol prices at the pump in Australia - at 3600 Kilometers per hour....

A direct hit with a sizzler can blow up and sink a US Aircraft Carrier.

This single explosion and sinking would effectively end the age of cheap oil.

Even if the USA retaliated and 'won' an oil war where one or more large US ships were sunk - It would be an extremely hollow victory - because of the massive economic damage that would come through the inevitable oil shock that would follow...

Australia would also be affected by this energy shock even as we are thousands of kilometers away from such a danger.

Because of world parity oil pricing...it doesnt matter where the oil comes from.

The price at the pump will quickly spiral out of control in an oil shock caused by a direct hit from a sizzler.

Expect $2, #3 or even $5 per litre at the pump in the days following such an attack...

Now that the sizzler is here - How responsible is it for our politicians to simply do the bidding of the big oil companies - and continue on with the massive degree of oil dependency that we have at present ?

Iran is suspected of having these missiles - quite likely ready to be fired from their new submarine fleet - some of which are also of a type that is not able to be detected by the US navy.....

The US navy does not have any defence against this new supersonic missile - and won't have for many years to come.

There would also be a massive increase in the level of debt of the USA - which is already at a point where the US is insolvent.

The next oil war would make things even worse - especially if it involved the use of a Sizzler missile..

But motorists using CNG would be unaffected.

Can you see why our oil dependency is so dangerous?

But how responsible is it with a media and political leaders in this country that say nothing about a fuel that protects people from grievous harm - and instead place your , your family's, your business's survival and economic well being at risk by their slavish behaviour as the lackeys of big oil ?

What the media and politicians are really doing is to quietly choose to protect the market share of the oil companies by virtue of their silence on alternative fuels.

But the correct course of action is to speaking out about the new alternative fuel choices like CNG - and help take the Australian people out of harm's way.

The US military presence in the Middle East is what keeps our petrol relatively cheap.

But now, new developments in weapons like the Sizzler have shifted this balance against our collective interest.

The Russian built Sizzler is a supersonic missile that is specifically designed to do one thing - Sink Aircraft Carriers.

Aircraft Carriers are the main reason why the USA can project military strength to faraway places.

Remove these vast storehouses of military equipment - and the USA is impotent.

Complex US naval antimissile systems are no match for the Sizzler.

In the last 15 kilometers of its 300 km range, the sizzler warhead detaches - and accelerates to three times the speed of sound.

Advanced Missile Electronics allows for tight turns and evasive maneuvers - and US naval defences are simply unable to cope with these tricks.

Speed and maneuverability makes the Sizzler unstoppable...

Known about this threat for about 8 years, little has been done to address this issue.

One possible solution - electromagnetic rail guns have been developed.

But these will be in place on US ships by 2025 at the earliest.

A bit late for the current standoff with Iran - The next oil war would have been fought and lost well before that time...

The realities of this situation are that

1. The US navy - which guards the worlds oil - can be defeated by a new supersonic missile. We are now in an environment of escalating risks of a conflict that harms people far beyond the theatre of war.

2. Ordinary people have been left in the dark by Australian politicians and media outlets about this threat, and the provision of alternative fuels that could protect people from oil dependency harms - have been repeatedly ignored.

After numerous government reports and submissions by the CNG industry in Australia over the past 15 to 20 years - the decision makers steadfastly refuse to do anything to address the dangers of oil dependency by introducing fuels for the existing vehicle fleet - such as CNG.

Most people are unable to afford a new alternative fuel hybrid or electric car - but they could afford a CNG conversion to their existing car - which is why CNG fuel is so strategically important to keep Australians moving.

The truth is that we are now in a very vulnerable window of time before the development and deployment of new weapons that can defeat these supersonic missiles.

The cost of making and storing Hydrogen is falling. By 2020 solar will be as cheap as coal.

But in 1978 Jack Nicholson probably wouldn't have the technology to drive his Chevy all that far.

This is because 1 litre of petrol is equivalent to 2400 litres of Hydrogen.

Assuming that you can store the Hydrogen, there must be a very big flow rate of Hydrogen to run a car.

14 litres of petrol drives you for 100 kilometers in a V8 engine (at about 25% efficiency).

This equals between 30,000 and 35,000 litres of Hydrogen. (Take a look at the size of Jacks fuel tank in his car) You need a lot of Hydrogen to drive a car.

This is why it is now measured in kilograms - not litres.

1 kilogram of Hydrogen in a smallish engine car takes you about 100 kilometers.

Usually it is compressed to 700 bar of pressure (10,000 psi) in a Carbon Fiber fuel tank.

Until other methods of Hydrogen storage are commercialized - This is how we use this fuel.

Most Hydrogen cars run electric motors - which are 90% efficient.

More than three times as efficient as even the best petrol powered engines. High efficiencies means that This means that less fuel is needed.

Electric motors in cars are powered by 'fuel cells' that use Hydrogen fuel from an onboard storage tank.

In the second last presentation - you can see the Chevy Sequel Hydrogen fuel cell car - on its historic 300 mile (480 kilometer) trip in 2008.

In the final presentation we have the 2011 Mercedes Benz S class Hydrogen powered concept car in the 2011 Frankfurt Motor show.

A full sized luxury zero emission electric vehicle that uses Hydrogen.

What would our transport fuel security be like if we made a lot of Hydrogen using waste water and big solar power plants in our deserts?

But it would be impractical to junk all our petrol cars overnight and next morning change to Hydrogen Electric next morning.

We need a sensible transition - a BRIDGE between the petrol powered cars of today and the Hydrogen Electric cars of the future.

That 'bridge' is CNG - a fuel which is compatible with Hydrogen..

Australian CNG could mirror the introduction of CNG to Singapore. Which occurred in 2003.

Local fuel - means no chance of overseas caused disruption to our fuel supplies - and abridge to the future.

This report has warned that global oil supplies could peak as early as this year, triggering widespread market failures and a shift in the balance of world power.

The report, which was obtained by the German newspaper Spiegel, was produced by analysts at the military think tank Bundeswehr Transformation Centre and warns that the peaking of oil supplies will result in numerous global challenges.

It predicts global oil supply could peak this year, resulting in decades of political and economic upheaval and warns that over the next 15 to 30 years, oil could become a decisive factor in the distribution of power, with oil exporters gaining increasing influence over countries dependent on oil imports.

The think tank also predicts that price shocks will impact a wide range of industries because the vast majority of industrial goods rely on oil either directly or indirectly for their production. It warns that ultimately peak oil could result in partial or complete market failures for many industries.

So why is is that nothing of this has ever appeared once in the Australian media...

Perhaps the reason is that high oil prices - mean windfall profits for oil companies. - and we have a concentrated media that allows easy control and manipulation ?

But such an action would also put your personal economic security and well being as risk.

So why were these news items in overseas publications - but never appeared in the Australian media - despite a clear case in the public interest for this to occur ?

Peak Oil - It's much closer and far more dangerous than you have been led to believe.

Paddy Manning of The Melbourne Age put together an article from information that others have been aware of for years - That finally tells us that we are at 5 minutes to midnight on the Peak Oil clock...

Peak oil is forcing its way to the top of the agenda with stark warnings from the International Energy Agency and others repeated on ABC radio and television this week, after an investigation by the Catalyst program.

Following up a similar program she made in 2005, journalist Jonica Newby gained a rare interview with the IEA chief economist, Fatih Birol, who said crude oil production peaked in 2006 and, in veiled terms, added governments should have started working seriously on the problem a decade ago and warned of the threat of more oil wars.

Whereas five years ago the agency expected total production - including oil from deep-sea drilling and unconventional sources such as tar sands - could rise to 120 million barrels a day by 2030, the agency now expects production will reach only 96 million barrels. And Birol reckons there are no guarantees it can be brought out of the ground in a timely fashion.

''Existing fields are declining so sharply that in order to stay where we are in terms of production levels, in the next 25 years we have to find and develop four new Saudi Arabias. That is a huge challenge.''

Worse, Catalyst also quoted the Swedish peak oil expert Kjell Aleklett - interviewed in this column last November - who said the agency's assumptions about future oil flow rates were impossibly optimistic and that total world production passed its peak a year ago.

Supply could fall short of demand as soon as 2014, warned consultants to a British pan-industry group co-ordinated by the engineering consultancy Arup and chaired by Virgin, whose founder, Sir Richard Branson, urged we should ''not let an oil crunch take us by surprise and be poorly prepared''.

In the lucky country, of course, we'll be fine. Rising income from coal and gas exports will help us pay higher oil prices, even as our oil trade deficit blows out and oil hits $US200 a barrel, as is forecast often enough. Can we go back to sleep now?

Not when the climate implications are taken into account, says Ian Dunlop, a former Shell executive and deputy convenor of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas, which brought Aleklett out last year.

Dunlop says the manifestations of peak oil were temporarily masked by the financial crisis - itself partly triggered by high oil prices which hurt struggling homeowners in the subprime mortgage belts of the US - but are now confronting us as the developed world increases consumption.

The world faces a 20-30 per cent reduction in oil availability by 2020, he says. ''It's a massive problem [that's] been pooh-poohed for a couple of decades.''

The problem with future oil production, Dunlop says, is the amount of energy you get out for the energy you expend - your return on investment - is dropping.

''Cheap oil is disappearing,'' he says. ''A lot of major exporting countries in the Middle East are now finding they need more for domestic markets, and there's not as much available for export.''

While Australia must keep drilling for oil, Dunlop says standards for deepwater exploration will have be rethought in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico and Montara spills - adding delay and expense to production - just as the explosion of the Piper Alpha oil rig in 1988, killing 167 workers, led to a complete revamp of safety practices in the North Sea.

Alternatives like conversion of gas or coal to liquids carry a huge penalty in terms of associated carbon emissions. Electrification of transport works only if there is a switch to clean energy.

Desperately needed, of course, is a policy to tackle both peak oil and climate change at the same time.

Last year the think tank Beyond Zero Emissions, with Melbourne University's Energy Research Institute, published its Zero Carbon Australia

Stationary Energy Plan, which shook things up by calling for investment of $37 billion a year to switch the whole country over to 100 per cent renewable energy within a decade. The plan included enough installed energy capacity to power all our transport needs.

Beyond Zero has assembled a team of scientists, engineers and planners working pro bono on a fully costed, national transport plan that will take in three streams: city passenger and public transport, freight, and intercity transport and high-speed rail.

Workshops are under way, drafts are circulating and the report is due out by the end of the year.

The executive director, Matthew Wright, says the opportunity for Australia is there to invest in new, climate-friendly transport infrastructure and avoid spending on high-priced oil imports, which Beyond Zero estimates could exceed $50 billion a year by 2015. ''That's what I call a great big tax,'' says Wright.

The thrust of the plan is to electrify the country's road and rail transport systems as much as possible with a renewable-powered grid, and the use a residual of liquid biofuels to replace oil for range-extending and some off-road and agricultural uses. Thousands of kilometres of new light and heavy rail would be laid across major cities. Car manufacturers would retool to make electric cars locally.

Very fast trains would link state and territory capitals, except Darwin, and major regional centres. This would match plans to lay thousands of kilometres of fast rail track in China and Spain to reach nearly 90 per cent of their populations by 2020.

It's the infrastructure we're going to need. Unfortunately it's not the infrastructure we're building, which is heavily skewed towards roads and against rail.

And if it all sounds expensive consider that we are still subsidising oil at a rate of billions of dollars a year, whether through diesel fuel tax rebates or a fringe benefits tax regime that encourages private company car use. As peak oil bites, that's crazy.

In a paper published in the journal Biofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, Joshua Gifford, a Master's student in mechanical engineering at Iowa State University (ISU), along with Robert C. Brown, director of ISU's center for sustainable environmental technologies, propose the evaluation of four metrics in well-to-wheels (WTW) analysis of automotive vehicles - primary energy consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water usage and cost of vehicle operation.

As Gifford and Brown explain:

Life cycle analysis for automotive transportation, commonly known as well-to-wheels analysis, has traditionally focused on GHG emissions and primary energy consumption.

Clearly, economizing on the use of primary energy sources and the amount of GHG emissions associated with automotive transportation are important sustainability metrics.

Other important metrics are water usage and cost of vehicle operation.

No scenario is likely to simultaneously minimize all four metrics, suggesting the identification of a single figure of merit that encompasses all four economies of transportation fuels.

We employed a normalization scheme that allowed calculation of a single composite score for each scenario called the CWEG (Cost-Water-Energy-GHG) score.

Automotive transportation scenarios evaluated in this paper include a variety of fossil and renewable primary energy sources; several energy carriers as transportation fuels; and three distinct vehicle platforms including internal combustion engines, battery electric vehicles, and fuel cell electric vehicles.

Okay, with that complex explanation out of the way, here's what Gifford and Brown discovered: compressed natural gas vehicles dominated the eco-standings, with CWEG scores ranging from 71 to 74 out of a possible 100. Diesel-electric vehicles (aka hybrids) scored 45 out of 100.

Meanwhile, fuel cell vehicles, running on hydrogen generated by using power from the U.S.' electric grid, had the lowest CWEG scores, ranging from 13 to 15.

The article costs money to access, and the abstract doesn't tell us what the score for BEVs was. Kudos to Gifford and Brown for including water - a vital substance if there ever was one - in their analysis.

MORE than 70 per cent of Australians say high fuel prices are putting the brakes on their quality of life.

The Canstar Blue survey of consumers also reveals that while petrol prices are hurting, motorists are battling back by making fuel companies win their custom.

"A whopping 66 per cent of respondents are choosing particular service stations where they can use fuel discount dockets and one in two are choosing to refuel on days where prices are typically lower," said Steve Mickenbecker, head of research at retail finance research company Canstar Cannex.

"They are doing their homework to ensure they are getting a good deal when it comes to petrol."

Mr Mickenbecker said 69 per cent of respondents indicated that price is more important than convenience when it comes to filling up their car.

"We were surprised by the survey finding that one in five respondents regularly wait until the red light comes on before refuelling, due to financial pressures," he said.

"Waiting that long to fill up your car will cost you more in the long run because you are not only risking running out of fuel - it can also damage your vehicle."

The independent consumer satisfaction survey of 2500 consumers also indicates that service station brand United beat its competitors by coming out on top with the most satisfied customers.

Customers scored United top marks for every category: overall satisfaction, price of petrol, service, range of items for sale, cleanliness and facilities.

The research reveals that consumers object to the high price of petrol and grocery items within petrol stations; staff pushing other products and services at point of sale; poor condition of facilities such as air pumps and windscreen washing buckets; wait times; and poor service.

Private industry would fund and install thousands of wind turbines in the Great Plains, which Pickens refers to as the potential "wind corridor" of the United States due to favorable wind resources and geographic location.

Pickens estimates that these turbines could generate enough power to provide 20 percent or more of the country's electricity supply.

Government would pay for electric power transmission lines to connect the turbine farms to the power grid. They would provide energy to the Midwest, South and Western regions of the country.

With wind energy providing a large portion of the nation's electricity, the natural gas that is currently used to fuel power plants would be used instead as a fuel for thousands of vehicles.

To increase efficiency, the Plan puts an emphasis on natural gas-burning fleets of trucks and buses.

Thus, the demand for petroleum products made from imported oil would be reduced.

In April 2011 the original plan was modified - it was reported that Pickens is putting more emphasis on CNG than Wind power - because if the price difference that favours Natural Gas.

Australia could also have our own Pickens plan - However, we could also rely on Solar power as well as wind to achieve this.

Our media has chosen not to report on it.

The age of oil is over - And the Saudis know it

But despte the availability of a cheap and supply stable alternative fuel beneath our feet in Australia - That can power our existing vehicle fleet - CNG - Australian politicians and our media want to prop up big oil and keep you in the dark.

You have probably heard of 'The Arab Spring' - a series of popular revolutions in the Middle East that our media have been telling us - will bring democratic change.

But a consequence of 'The Arab Spring' for Saudi Arabia - one of the worlds biggest oil producers was to create a very high price for the 'Break Even Point' for oil.

This price has nothing to do with the cost of production of oil. Instead it is the price that the Saudi's must charge in order to fund domestic spending without running large deficits.

In a reaction to the civil unrest sweeping Egypt and Tunisia in February and March 2011 - the Saudis increased public spending by $133 billion. (over half the size of the entire Australian Federal budget -in one year)

Affordable housing, housing loans and health care, social security payments and pay rises for public servants are the kinds of things that this additional money went towards - sounds a bit like a bribe doesnt it?

But the hard fact is that every time that you go to the petrol pump - you are paying for these things indirectly - via world parity pricing of oil.

Every time you pump petrol into your car - you are paying for the Arab Spring - and you didnt even know that you were doing this did you ?

You also pay for the weapons that kill our troops in Afghanistan - (these weapons are invariably imported from Iran) - but that's another story...

But what this now means for Saudi Arabia is that they cannot afford a decline in the oil price - otherwise it will risk great political instability.

So because of the Arab Spring - high oil prices are here to stay.

The break even price for oil will not drop below $80 now - ever again. But it will climb to over $110 within a few years - unless of course other factors drive it even higher.

The Saudi's know that if they are to keep their kingdom - they have to keep the masses happy with more oil money for bread and circuses.

And this has a direct effect on you every time you buy petrol.

In recent speeches, Saudi ARAMCO president - Al-Falih has said some very revealing things.

They dont get more important than Al-Falih - as President of ARAMCO he is the boss of all the Saudi Oil - the biggest oil company on earth..

He has spoken about a thing called the Accelerated Transformation program.

What this is is a plan that looks at a time when Saudi Arabia no longer sells oil - or at least much less oil than they used to.

Clearly, he is preparing Saudis for the end of the oil age.

So while we have rabid Peak Oil deniers here in Australia who laugh about 'foolish people' that are concerned about Peak Oil - we also have the boss of one of the largest oil producers in the world saying things like :

- producing natural gas instead of oil

- calling natural gas 'a bridge' to a clean energy future.

Both cannot be correct here - So who I wonder who is making a mistake.

Is it Al-Falih ?

But it doesnt end there.

In a recent speech at the worlds largest oil conference in Houston Taxas in 2011, Saad Turaiki - Vice President of porduction at ARAMCO , talked about :

Saudi Aramco's gas exploration and development plan.

Saad Turaiki said that the aims of this plan were to find and generate enough shale gas to run all the kingdom's power and desalination plants and lead to an even bigger petrochemicals industry.

Saad wants to run the entire Saudi economy on gas - and sell oil and more lucrative oil products from what is left of Saudi Oil - not to the USA - but to the Chinese.

He is preparing for a future for gas - not oil.

So what does this say about the oil age as we know it.

- It is over.

But speak to an Australian politician - and he or she will talk as if we are still in the full oil well times of the 1960's.

So how well are you being led on this vital issue ?

If the Saudis will be driving on CNG in the near future - why is it that this fuel is not good enough for Australians ?

Is this insistence by the Australian Government to avoid the introduction of CNG nothing more than a cynical trick - driven by a desire to boost oil company profits at a time of increased risk so our oil supply because of Peak Oil - and so placing an unwitting and ill informed public in great danger ?

Oil dependency as the oil age draws to a close is inflationary.

Inflation means higher interest rates - economic poison to a nation with an epidemic of mortgage stress.

Australia is a population up to it's eyeballs in debt. We need alternative fuels that are not inflationary - like CNG.

But by being so oil dependent at a time of Peak Oil - we invite inflation to our economy and thereby place everybody in economic danger.

This is why the introduction of CNG would be a good thing for individual Australians as well as for our economy.

AN Australian study into childhood asthma has sounded an alarm over city living, with even apparently safe levels of traffic pollution found to exacerbate the respiratory condition.

An epidemiologist at the University of WA, Gavin Pereira, said the study showed how traffic pollution was a major factor in the "worsening of this respiratory condition" in children.

There were other troubling implications, he said, as Australia had far more traffic-intensive cities than Perth and the effect was seen even as air quality was deemed to meet safety benchmarks.

- Actually, a lot of the air pollution being talked about here and also on the you tube links below is called - Ultrafine' air pollution.

The pollution particles inhaled from the exhausts of cars and trucks are often so small that they can not only lodge deep in the lungs - they can also cross over from the lungs into the bloodstream.

Ever wondered why all these you tubes are American ?

I suspect that it is because the Australian Authorities have a rather different views on this problem and dont say as much about it as they do overseas.

But the fact is that CNG, Hydrogen Blended CNG and Hydrogen fuels create very low levels of air pollutants when used as fuel in conventional cars and trucks.

A carbon emission reduction of at least 50% when using this fuel.

The same snap lock connector is used - as for a regular CNG conversion.

The would be no trouble in using a Hythane pump with a car that had a CNG conversion.

CNG closer to home

In Singapore since 2003.

In 2003, the Singapore Government introduced CNG.

7 years later - this country now has a Peak Oil insurance policy.

But after 7 years of opportunities for an easy media story - Not one newspaper or TV station has ever mentioned this to the Australian public.

Surely such a report would be a very good fit with the constant discussion about our high fuel prices ?

I would have thought that given that we price our oil on the Singapore price - the failure to report on CNG in Singapore is really a rather embarrasing omission by our media...But the again - maybe they have no shame.

The biggest CNG service station opened last year - with over 40 pumps - it cost $SGD16 million.

I have nothing against public transport - But do the maths on a certain $1350 million public transport ticketing system that was recently purchased by the Victorian State Government.

I make that $1350 Million would buy us over 3500 CNG pumps - enough for Australia - and a few left over for Papua New Guinea. and New Zealand if they happen to want any.

Another point worth noting - That CNG service station was built in 4 months.

His views are increasingly being taken seriously by overseas leaders in politics and industry.

But in Australia - very few people have ever heard of him.

Because Lovins not only thinks that we are in an Oil Endgame - but he has a plan to win it led by business for profit.

Transport fuels in Australia - a toxic public policy mix

In may 2011 the Saudi Arabian government launched a new policy that looked at life for the Saudi's after oil.

There is even a plan to convert all Saudi car owneres to CNG - Thats right - no more petrol powered cars in a country that most of the readers of this website will recognise as an oil rich nation.

Note again the fuel are they looking at - Natural Gas.

So if the Saudi Government by their actions are telling us that they are almost out of oil - but we in Australia have a media that has not even admitted that Peak Oil exists - then who is being lied to here ?
