Cleat styles varies according to the kind of sports
Originally, football boots or cleats were heavy boots used for protecting heel and ankle injuries, and this usage of cleats remained same in northern Europe for a long time. But these boots were insufficient to deal with winter, wet or muddy conditions for soccer and other sports players. Leather studs were fixed into the boots for the first time to cope up with this problem. But players still needed different sets of boots with variety stud length for various conditions. In the mid of 1950s boots with interchangeable screw-in studs introduced and became very popular. These were made of rubber, metal piece or plastic to deal with various weather conditions. A light weight boot more like a studded shoe, became immense popular in southern Europe and South America, where weather and field conditions were completely different from the other parts of world. Finally, this became the standard style.
As mentioned above, style of cleat and stud arrangement varies according to surface type, kind of sport, weather condition and even the player position or role in the game.
For hard surfaces amateur participants may prefer to wear sneakers, bladed sole or plastic stud shoes; in most sports, positions and role of the game this is sufficient.
For most effective grip on grassy or sodden field, a screw stud is recommended these may be metal, rubber or plastic.
In rugby, the screw-in stud is very popular and always preferred, especially for those athletes who are playing role of prop, hooker, and lock, where more surface grip is needed for these positions. In general, these cleats are heavier than as compared to other cleats or football boots.
