Three Great Football Offensive Line Drills

One of the most important yet least appreciated positions on a football field is the offensive line. Offensive linemen are critical in making every offensive play work. Every other offensive position will have plays where they don't influence the outcome of a play, but offensive linemen have a big role in every player.

Offensive linemen don't seem to mind that they're underappreciated. They also don't seem to mind that they are so important on every play. One of the reasons for this is because they are well-prepared. And the reason they're usually well-prepared is because they practice great football offensive line drills.

Football O-Line Drills to Add to Practice:

O-Line Drill #1

The first drill involves one offensive lineman at the base of a hill that rises up 8-10 yards and two defensive linemen on the hill. The defensive linemen should have protective shields to absorb the blocks.

At the sound of the whistle the offensive linemen charges up the hill and tries to drive block the first defender up the hill. When the whistle sounds a second time the offensive lineman disengages the first block and then tries to drive block the second defender.

The drill ends after the second block lasts for 5-7 seconds or after the offensive lineman drives the defender to the top of the hill.

This drill helps teach offensive linemen to fire off the line of scrimmage. It teaches them to use short, choppy steps. It also helps them learn to engage one blocker, drive him backward, and then scrap-off to another defender.

Offensive Line Drill #2

The second of the 3 great football offensive line drills will really help teach offensive linemen how to use their larger muscles - back, thighs, and hips - when firing off the ball and into a defender.

This drill is very simple and quick.

The offensive lineman gets down on his hands and knees. His feet should be off the ground slightly with his toes pointing backward. Across from him will be a defender with a blocking shield.

At the whistle the offensive lineman fires up from the ground and drives his shoulder pads into the blocking shield. He should not use his feet or toes at all. In fact, his toes should remain pointing backward at all times.

Football Offensive Line Drill #3

The first 2 football offensive line drills are used to teach run blocking. Now we're going to take a look at a drill that will help with pass blocking.

This is another easy drill. All the players need is weights that are about 25 pounds.

The players will get down into their pass blocking positions with their butts down.

When the whistle sounds they will begin taking short choppy steps and thrusting their arms out while holding the weights.

Each time the whistle blows they will rotate a ¼ turn and continue to thrust out their arms while taking short choppy steps and keeping their butts down and their legs bent.

This will build arm strength and also help teach the proper pass blocking technique.

Offensive linemen have a great deal of responsibility on each and every offensive play during a football game. To help them play well with all this responsibility, there are many great football o
