Helpful Quarterback Football Drills

Many people believe that a quarterback is given too much credit, or blame, for the outcome of a football game. While this may be true, the quarterback does play a major role in the outcome of every football game. And, though it may go unnoticed, there are a lot of little things the quarterback has to do well in order to be successful. That's why it's so important that quarterback football drills cover all the necessary jobs the quarterback must perform.

One major task a quarterback has that often goes unnoticed is simply taking the snap and handing the ball off or dropping back to pass with it. A quarterback must do this in rain or snow. He also must do it in frigid temperatures with gloves on or with his hands half frozen. He will handle the ball dozens of times and he's expected never fumble even once.

Quarterback Kick-Start Drills

To help the quarterback with handling the ball, there are a few helpful quarterback drills. One of the best is simply to have the quarterback circle the ball around his body, switching hands with the ball as he does. He should start at the head, go down around the chest, around the stomach, the waist, and three times around one leg. Then he should come-up around the other leg and keep going up until he reaches his head again.

To make it more challenging, he could be forced to perform this quarterback drill with wet or new balls. Wet and new balls are always more slippery than a broken-in dry football.

In a perfect world, the quarterback would be able to always have a solid base below him and he would always be able to step into the throw. In fact, practicing this should be one of the many football quarterback drills he performs. However, throughout the course of a game the quarterback will be harassed and he'll often be forced to throw under less than perfect conditions.

For this reason, every quarterback should perform football quarterback drills that helps him throw accurately with velocity when he's unable to use the proper footwork.

There are two quarterback drills that will help with this. The first requires the quarterback to be down on one knee while he throws. This will also help him concentrate on rotating his torso and his shoulders as he throws. He should first throw to another player who is five yards away. Slowly the distance should be increased five yards at a time.

The quarterback should also throw the ball while sitting on his bottom. Again, he'll need to rotate his torso and his shoulders in order to get good velocity and accuracy with the ball.

These football quarterback drills - sitting and kneeling - can be used as warm-up activities for the quarterback too. While a quarterback should always use his feet and legs to throw when possible, these drills will help him learn to throw well if he can't use the proper techniques with his legs and feet.

Quarterback football drills are very important to the success of any quarterback. There are a variety of tasks a quarterback must perform while playing and all these tasks should be addressed by a drill. Two actions that require drills are handling the ball and throwing the ball w
