Football (soccer) coaching

Let's coach together

Hi there,

My names Gaz Curley. I'm a football (soccer) coach from Manchester England. The players I coach range in age from 3 to open age.

Football coaching is my passion and over the years I have noticed that the tips and ideas found on the Internet are still extremely limited.

There are a few coaching drills on youtube but they are few and far between. So my aim is to create this lens and give coaches an opportunity to share detailed drills and coaching tips.

My advice to any coaches looking to have an input regarding drill ideas is be descriptive. Tell us why you did the drill. How effective it was. Was it to achieve something you saw needed attention during a match? Was it fun or hard work? Do you have a youtube video you would like to link? What equipment you found necessary?

If there are good websites you know of then send a link. Whether its drills or any other form of advice that would benefit other coaches. Do you have a story or a problem that you have or haven't got the answer to.

Ask any questions and I will post them on here. Then any other coaches can maybe help you find the answer.

Consider this page your weekly training plan and tell us what your intentions are this week. Then give us feedback on how it went once you have finished your session.

There are no limits. If it is regarding football (soccer) coaching then we want to see it...

...You can't go wrong. !!

scouts

Do you hate how much you love them? Or love how much you hate them?

scouted

As a coach our role is to develope children within the game of footbal (soccer). Most of us run a team and all of us like winning. So does this leave you over the moon when a scout wants to sign a player you have helped to develope. Or do you hate losing your best players to these bigger/pro clubs?

Have you got any relevent information with regards to football (soccer) coaching?

Questions, Interesting stories, Links, Videos, Drills, Tips etc...

I will try and post as much as possible to help other coaches on this page. Take what information suits you and post here to give some information of your own. What ever it is we all want to see it.

For the record regarding the scouts poll above: I would love for one of my squad members to be scouted. Somebody commented Calling me selfish but Stevie G must have misunderstood. In 18 months I have had 1 5 year old go to Liverpool fc, 2 5 year old lads have gone to Everton, 1 has gone to Manchester city, and 2 have gone to Manchester united. I was extremely pleased with myself. Thanks for your vote Stevie G. Much appreciated.

FC Barcelona soccer drill: Through ball pass game

This is a fantastic drill. Notice how they drill then enhance the drill. Progression.

Coaching soccer like Guardiola at FC BARCELONA

I found this extremely helpful. I was struggling to teach age 5 kids to hold their positions. I explained them verbally and positioned them on the pitch. But then I found the usual ball chasing ensued as soon as the whistle blew.

This drill allows the child to experience wide play and help you 'the coach' to identify a players natural/best position. Also wingers start to stay out wide and be more patient for the ball. Whilst the other players learn how to use the width and look out wide for an option during a game.

Soccer coaching like Mourinho / Real Madrid

I found that these videos show how important the correct equipment and orgaisation of the equipment really are.

This is my own video. It shows the benefit of 1 to 1 coaching without to much verbal coaching. Allowing the child to learn through experience and enjoyment and low pressure.

Why do certain countries seem to produce better players?

Looking back at world cup and champions league winners over the last few decades it would be fair to say that some countries seem to do better than others.

Most recently Spain and Spanish clubs are running away with every trophy available. In fact I'm almost surprised FC Barcelona haven't won the premier league. I'm sure they would if they were involved.

So what is it that the Spanish are doing that we are not here in the Uk?

Is it that our British life style and weather conditions mean we train less?

Or is it that the grass roots coaches are doing a better job in Spain than the coaches here?

A friend of mine is a teacher. He thinks that in the play ground there are more bullies in the Uk. These bullies tend to listen less in class and pay less attention in sports related lessons. These bullies usually dominate school yard football. Where as in Spain or else where the brighter kids are equally involved and their mental capabilities make them progress quicker than the not so bright kids. This naturally leads to better footballers in the future.

Another friend and fellow football coach thinks differently. He says that in Spain they have been coaching kids individually and more personally (1 to 1). Building the player as an individual. Concentrating on dribbling and trickery. Making them skilful and fast as opposed to the British coach. We tend to coach shooting and passing with a team focus rather than individual progress. This means each child touches the ball less than a Spanish kid that is learning to dribble. The Spanish coaches believe that to finish a dribbling drill with a shot on goal is enough training on shooting. Also that any kid with individual ability will be able to pass the ball regardless of amount of training on passing. Makes sense to me.

So will we be going to training this week with step-overs and drag backs on the session plan? I would love to see one of my players  become the next Iniesta.

.... step-overs and drag backs is it then.

Be descriptive.

The first stage of showing a positions and possession drill: 'Tell it'!

Remember that youngs kids have a short attention span. I find that kids listen more when they are grouped together. I get them to huddle up. Then I say 'is everybody listening'? Their response is usually 2 or 3 kids quietly saying 'yeh'. Then I say, slightly louder this time 'is everybody listening'! You will usually have their full attention after this.
My advice is: tell it, show it, tell it again, run it, tell it again.
