Get That Football Autograph
This lens is here to help you ensure you get that sports or football autograph you're looking for. It's full of tips, hints, ideas and strategies for obtaining it, and for all things associated with the wonderful world of Football Autographs
If you're a keen fan, collector or investor in sports and in particular football autographs then here's a few tips to obtaining the autograph you are after.
First off, if you live near the stadium then head give their office a quick call and see if you can obtain a schedule for training sessions for your team. Staff are usually more than happy to give this information if they know you are looking to get a football autograph. Don't try and pull the wool over their eyes - be open and upfront about your intentions.
If you live out of town / state see if you can get a friend to take a trip down to the stadium for you. They'll probably love the chance to meet the players and they may get a piece of history for their efforts too!
The key then is to arrange to be there prior to or following the training session. Top tip - find out how long the session lasts. The last thing you want to do is wait outside the stadium while the team start about a 5 hour training session! So, it pays to get as much info beforehand as possible and plan accordingly.
Getting autographs at training sessions is often a lot easier than pre or post match. Players may not be too inclined to sign autographs on match day (especially when the result was not a good one!) It's often that bit more relaxed at the training session and players may be more receptive to spending a few minutes with you.
Take the necessary stationery! The amount of times I have heard of people looking to get autographs - but haven't brought either a pen for the player to write with or something to put the autograph on. Make sure you have everything ready before you set off. Make a note of all the items you need to take with you. For example two pens (and check they both work), a mini autograph football, picture, team shirt etc.
When you do finally get in front of the player there are a few points to remember too.
1. Be polite. They don't have to sign anything, but in most cases they will be more than happy to if you are civil, polite and aren't too 'pushy'
2. Wish them good luck for the next game, or ask them something you've always wanted to know. They may be famous, but they're still human. Don't be scared to ask. Don't expect them to spend the next hour chatting to you, but remember you are allowed to speak to them!
3. Thank them for their time. It's common courtesy - but it's hugely appreciated if you show your appreciation. Plus, it also helps your chances of obtaining future autographs
4. Don't go overboard. If a player is clearly in a rush don't try and get them to sign your shirt, a picture, the balls (yours, your dads, your friends), the cap, your auntie's dish cloth and your arm! Be selective and consider their time aswell. It seems obvious but many a time to we see people getting upset because "they didn't sign everything!"
5. And make sure you get them to sign their own picture! You'd be amazed at how many people have asked players to sign another player's picture. Not a great look and don't be surprised if your request results in a bit of a sideways glance!
