1.Decide what you are going to do with you cards.Are you going to invest in cards and sell them later for a profit?Are you going to collect them to look at them?Are you going to just collect autograph cards?Decide what you want to do.
2.Get a price guide.It would be a very good thing to get a price guide , and you might even carry it around with you to garage sells , flea markets , and card shops.If you ever want to know the price of a card , just go to your car and have a look in the price guide.
3.When looking to buy a card , there are several things to look at.You should look at the corner wear , or how sharp the corner is.You should look for creases in the card.You should look for how centered a card it, or how even the borders around the card are.And , although rather rare , you should look for alterations , like trimming , where the seller has trimmed a side of the card to try to increase the centering ,therefore increasing the value.
4.Look for flaws such as slanted borders , lums and bubbles on the surface of the card ,if puzzles on the back have been scratched off,if the card has been scratched,if there are rubber band marks ,if something has been spilled on the card , etc.
5.Look for insert cards, or cards that are different from the base set.These cards could include jersey or game ball swatches,autographs,limited edition cards,special designs,etc.
6.Preserve your cards.Use plastic casings and card sheets to preserve your cards.These can be purchased for a cheap price at just about any card store.
7.Get your card graded.If you have a great card,and would like to have it graded on a 1-10 scale,send it off to beckett or another grading sevice.This increases the value,and they also send it back to you in a very hard plastic case that doesn't open.This ensures the value of the card.
