Football Manager 2009 features

List of new features in FM 2009

* 3D Match Engine - This year's match engine has seen more testing than ever before having been extensively beta tested in Football Manager%u2122 Live for the past year.

* TV View - Watch your matches in new full screen TV view and customise your match day screen with widgets to view the information you need as a football manager, be it player performance, match action zones, pitch radar, latest scores and many more.
* Assistant Manager Feedback - Pre-match and in-match feedback from your Assistant Manager on how the team is performing and your player's motivation levels, as well as hints on how your tactics are working and how you could outwit the opposition's tactics.

* Improved Media - SI have worked hard to reflect the greater impact the media has been having in recent years on the world of football, in the in-game dealings with the press. The game now features more news stories, more detail and greater media interaction than ever before, creating an even more realistic simulation of the football world.

* Press Conferences - Attend pre-match and post-match press conferences with local and national journalists and build up relationships with them over time, but choose your answers carefully because they could come back to haunt you in the media at a later date.
* Transfer System - Completely new and re-written transfer system code, providing an even more realistic simulation of real-life football transfers.

* Transfer Rumours - View the latest news on what players are being speculated on, and who's said to be interested in securing their services.

* Board Confidence - Following on from its addition in Football Manager%u2122 2008, board confidence has been expanded and improved. In addition, the board will now also offer feedback on your squad harmony and your club's stature in the football world.

* Preferred Moves - Train your players to learn 'preferred moves' to add to their game. For example, train central defenders to not dive into tackles, or wingers to do step-overs before crossing the ball.

* Female Manager - For the very first time you can now play as a female manager. All of the text in the game now also has a female gender so the game represents female managers and staff in the game in the correct gender.

* Realistic Finances - SI have listened to feedback from all of their researchers to try and model every single financial area of the game correctly for each country, including transfers, staff wages, budgets, ticket prices, season tickets, competition bonuses and club sponsorships.

* Updated Competitions - Fully updated for the new 2008/09 football season with all the latest league, club and player data, featuring over 5,000 playable clubs from over 50 countries, and around 350,000 players and staff from around the world, drawn fresh from the famous Sports Interactive database.

More FM 2009 features

Over the last couple of weeks, SI have slowly been releasing different pieces of information about the new Football Manager 2009 game which is due for release in November. Alot of the features can be first unearthed by subscribing to the Football Manager Podcast, where Miles Jacobson takes an hour out of his Thursday to eat crisp, drink alchopops and talk to friends about the world of Football (sounds like a night at the pub), but Miles will also go through a number of features to keep us listening.

Distance Running

For those statistic obsessed Football Managers, we have a new number to the spreadsheet that greets us everytime we load up the game. This time we can see the distance that your players are running within each game. The feature will probably do more for player selection then anything, now we will be able to present the evidence to the players who just aren't trying enough within the team and replace them, I like it and it will certainly make it easier for me to make decisions about substitutes during the game or see in which areas of the field your players are getting run about too much, causing them to tire.

Improved Team Reports

Team reports have been something that I have found useful since their introduction in 2008, especially when you first arrive at a new club, you can see at a glimpse where you team needs improving and the up and coming players you should keep hold of. But now you assistant manager will be able to give you more information then that, he can even suggest players for you to buy now. But is this taking the games AI involvement with the manager too far? I will have to play with it before I truly know what I am talking about, but I feel that this is starting to bridge the gap between you playing the game and you just following a series of instructions to success. Indeed it probably does happen in real life that assistant manager will be able to suggest players though so maybe not all bad and hopefully all this will rely on the quality of you assistant manager.

Award History

Awards that you team get will now be stored so that you can look back and marvel about how good you have done over the years. A new feature that will help you gloat to your mates or analyse how players have done over the years. But I think just a little bit of window dressing, good implementation but nothing that will change the way we play.

Returning from holiday

More options then you can shake a stick at, now if you play the game in holiday mode? I don't understand why you would (when was the last time you seen Alex Ferguson taking a break during the seasons proceedings?) You can now apply for jobs in certain leagues instead of applying for everything (although you still get this option). The only way I would find this useful for myself is when I have been sacked or resigned from a club, it can tire when you have to endlessly hit continue or when going on holiday, it returning you with a approach from MK Dons after you have won the Premiership and World Cup 5 times in a row with Millwall and San Marino. I can now narrow it down to a particular league my skills will be best utilised within, but again another one of those features that will just come in handy.

Improved Player Ratings

An addition that has come from the Football Manager Live development, player ratings during games will have decimal points, for the die hard statisticians another good introduction. Once again it will help improve the decision making during games, it can be so hard when you are looking at ratings and two players have a 7 but you need to replace one and for a long time now FM has been crying out for the difference between a good 7 performer and a bad 7. Because if your team is winning you will more then likely or not see alot of 7's in your side and miss a weaker link in the side and quickly lose your hold on a game.

Pick Your Feeder Team

At last you will be able to ask for a specific club to be linked with in this years game. As you have had to do so far, you will still need to get gain the boards confidence before they give you such powers, but now you won't have to rely on the luck of the draw to get to the teams such as Crewe who have a great youth policy. But also teams abroad and teams you want to loan players to it would make more sense for the big clubs to give their players better experience playing for the better clubs.

Ask if a player is loanable

You have been able for some time put in enquiries of the availability to buy certain players, but now you can find out if you can loan players. I think a fantastic addition for the lower league managers, as when I am in the lower divisions I will go through team upon I will go through team upon team to see if I can loan one of their youngsters. Enquiring will make negotiations much quicker and easier. Or those players who are hardly playing in the first team, but would fit in fantastic for yours despite that tight budget.

Improved Stadium Expansions

Football Manager strangely has always expanded the stadium during new seasons, this would rarely happen in the upper leagues, causing you to lose money as seats are unavailable during construction and it takes that much longer. SI have made expansions quicker and more realistic by allowing the workmen in after the last home game of the season.

No More B Teams

Now the B teams will be separate entities in themselves, B teams are mostly associated with management in Spain and now the B teams will be regarded just as affiliations of the giant teams, I am guessing this is what happens already in the real world. I don't know what difference this will make as this is as much information as I have got and I have no clue how this will play out in the game. Will you now have to loan you first team players to the B teams or will you still be able to drop them up and down like a reserve team? Only SI has the answer.

Rules Fully Shown

Just a little bit of house keeping for SI, making sure are gaming experience is as real as possibly can be. Rules will now be displayed for individual competitions such as the French 'Joker' Rule. Can anyone actually tell me what this is?

The game is looking better and better each time you see it, a fine balance between new features and the improvement of the old ones. I am really getting excited now about the new game and have high hopes that it will definitely live up to being one of the best games SI have ever made.

Exclusive Interview with Miles Jacobsen about FM 2009

Interview with Director of SiGames: Football Manager 2009 creators

Source: FM 2009 Exclusive Interview!

Vitaliy: I noticed on the screen shot http://www.sigames.com/graphics/images/1721.jpg that ratings of players became noninteger and therefore more exact (6.4 instead of 6, 6.6 instead of 7). This is small but great feature that allows to evaluate the whole performance of a player more exactly. Will this feature appear at the release version of FM 2009?

Miles: Yes - it was announced on the first episode of the second season of the Football Manager podcast, which is available on Itunes for free, alongside some other features, and another 10 or so announced on the second podcast.

Vitaliy: Many guys who play FM on their laptops are worried that they will not be able to watch match 3D Mode (TV view). Can you specify changes in system requirements caused by 3D Match Engine? Actually, what CPU and Video Card will be minimally needed for 3D view?

Miles: We haven't finalised system specs yet, and won't until the game is finished and full compatability testing is done. If 3d is unavailable for a user, the game should default to 2d. It will all depend on the capabilities of the machine - I use a laptop, and the game works fine.

Vitaliy: I live in Ukraine. So the logical question is: Will Football Manager 2009 be selling officially in Ukraine this year?

Miles: Not at retail, no. It should be available online, and we are looking into those possibilities at the moment.

Vitaliy: Don't know may be you got tired answering this question but: How soon will new screen shots or some news about FM 2009 appear?

Miles: There's been lots of news. The 2 podcasts have provided another 15 features on top of the ones announced on the you tube video. There are no new screenshots planned - we're concentrating on getting the game done.

Vitaliy: How much was AI (match engine) changed in FM 2009? Is it like "many small good changes" or "totally new core of match engine"?

Miles: It's been improved through lots of testing via Football Manager Live.

Vitaliy: There are some people having scepticism about the release version of Football Manager. Well, you know, actually, they say that there will be a lot of bugs in the release version as in the previous year, and they will not play FM until the first patch is out. Do you have any objections about that this time?

Miles: People should try out the demo, then decide based on that.

Vitaliy: Will FM 2009 demo contain just one quickstart with restriction of gaming time as usually? Or may be there will be more extended demo this time?

Miles: There will, as always, be 2 version of the demo, one with 1 quickstart, and one with a few quickstarts. The demo will, as always, be a half season demo, which is already huge compared to the majority of games on the market, and one of the few games where saved games are compatible with the final release.

Vitaliy: I see that new version of FM will have a lot of cool new features. It's a really long step from FM 2008 as for me. It's interesting to know: what new feature of FM 2009 do you, personally, like most of all?

Miles: There are a lot of things I really enjoy, some of which are unannounced currently, but I'm really enjoying the TV view and the new player rating system that you talk about in question 1.

Vitaliy: What's your opinion about The True Football Manager blog and it's influence on FM community?

Miles: We are very grateful to everyone in the community who gives up their own time to make blogs or websites about our games - a lot of us at SI ran our own sites, did data updates, skins and the like before we were part of the studio.
