Review: New Footloose Soundtrack 2011 With Blake Shelton

Ranked #451 in Music, #10,406 overall

Music & Songs Footloose 2011 O.S.T.

Where was Glee's Ryan Murphy or Step Up director Jon Chu when it came to choosing a director that would do justice to the New Footloose Soundtrack 2011 & Movie? Really, how hard could it be? The musical template was already set up by the successful Highschool Musical movies.

It even would have been fun to see what the movie would have been like in the hands of a music video director like say, Spike Jonze who has experience directing bands like Fatboy Slim & the Beastie Boys plus film experience on Being John Malkovich & Where the Wild Things Are.

The 2011 movie version of Footloose falls flat on its face with little known Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer who fought for creative control of the movie then chose to focus instead on making the movie more than a fluff piece, wanting to dramatically explore the movie's theme of unjustified reactionary authoritarianism. On the 10th anniversary of 9-11, this theme certainly has relevance but not in a dance flick.

Call me shallow, but I just wanted to see more dance numbers, more poppin' and lockin', less fighting, less preaching and yeah, maybe a dance off or two. What would have made the movie stronger is a celebration of life in reaction to such tragedy with a subtle weaving of that theme rather than to take us hostage by this premise.

As soon as the lights went up, I remember thinking, well that wasn't that bad. The dialogue was fun and snappy. The dancing was enjoyable. I was expecting far worse for a remake. But when you think about it, that's not exactly the most rave review either. I asked my friend what he thought and since he had never seen the original, his one sentence flat review summed up the movie's biggest problem, "I thought there should have been more dancing".

Yeah! They Kept the Movie's Theme Song

Kenny Loggins Footloose Sung By Blake Shelton

I have mixed feelings about the 2011 version of Footloose sung by country superstar Blake Shelton (The Voice). It's virtually indistinguishable from Kenny Loggins original version. But it's kind of why I like it as well. Really, what more could Shelton's cover version have done to improve upon a classic 80s movie theme. If Shelton were on American Idol, I'm sure based on this performance alone, Simon Cowell would deem him to be a karaoke cruise ship entertainer.

What Do You Think?

I used to be a wedding DJ and Footloose would be the one song that kids, teenagers, parents and grandparents would all swarm to the dance floor. It was always a fun song to end the evening.

Here's hoping this song will re-surface on wedding dance floors and proms much the same way Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" enjoyed renewed popularity because of Glee.

Original Vs. Remake

Kenny Loggins who also wrote and performed the movie theme songs: "I'm Alright" for Caddyshack and "Danger Zone" for Top Gun proves that his music still sounds great today.

Will Footloose Bring Back the Booty Call?

Or The Electric Slide & Cupid Shuffle?

For me, country line dance has never gone out of style and there are countless people around the world still doing it especially in countries like France, Spain, the U.K. & the Philipines. Here's hoping Footloose shines a spotlight on line dance and how it's a great way to stay active, fit and have fun at the same time.

Line Dance Songs Featured in Footloose

Whitney Duncan & Big & Rich

"So Sorry Mama" by Whitney Duncan is the first song in the line dance scene, playing in the background while people are doing what looks to be a fairly simple line dance while Willard confesses to Ren he can't dance. For the big line dance number that follows in the bar, it's Big & Rich with Gretchen Wilson singing "Fake I.D."

Step Up More Songs Than FootlooseJust as a way of gauging how much music and dance is featured in the 2011 Footloose Movie, you just need to look at the movie's official soundtrack which only includes 12 songs vs. the 18 featured on a similar dance themed movie like Step Up 3D.

Jon Chu Would Have Been My First Pick

Director Step Up Movies, Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never"

Step Up director, Jon Chu is a dancer's director. He's absolutely smitten by music and dance. This comes through not only in Step Up and Never Say Never but on his YouTube video side project LXD: League of Extraordinary Dancers where he's captured incredible dance footage of dancers like Glee's Harry Shum, Jr.

Original Footloose Director Walked Away

"This Is It" Director Kenny Ortega

This is It Kenny Ortega Michael Jackson FootlooseActually, most of the blame rests on the shoulders of Paramount head honcho Adam Goodman. Variety Magazine reports Goodman wanted "an edgier drama with less emphasis on the musical numbers".

It's widely reported that the tight fisted studio executive also wanted to keep the budget down to less than $25 million which caused Michael Jackson's "This Is It" director Kenny Ortega to walk off the project since he couldn't stage elaborate musical numbers.

Variety Magazine Article: Ortega Exits Paramount's Footloose Over Budget & Tone Differences

Kenny Ortega to Direct Dirty Dancing Remake

Contrast Footloose with the current action blockbuster Real Steel where director Shawn Levy was given the leeway and support of Disney & Dreamworks to burn through the movie's music budget. Even though the Hugh Jackman movie includes a dancing boxing robot, the movie's really not a musical but more of an action movie.

Yet the movie's soundtrack is so much more memorable because all the music totally relates to the characters and robots, helping to best serve the story while the soundtrack to Footloose feels like a random collection of songs thrust in because of an obligation to the original movie.

Rap Music and Rock Work Well in Reel Steel Fight Scenes

Edgier Vs. Dancier?

Black Swan vs. Footloose

I wonder if behind closed doors, Paramount big shots were actually looking to sculpt Footloose into a tightly wound psychological drama based on the success of Black Swan. Seriously, if I wanted to see a drama making a political statement, I don't want to see those life lessons mashed up onto my movie going experience when I'm expecting a no brainer dance film.

If I did, I'd take my hard earned cash to be captivated by the likes of Ryan Gosling & George Clooney in Ides of the March or Demi Moore & Simon Baker in the upcoming Margin Call instead of a half-baked dramance with relative unknowns Kenny Wormald & Julianne Hough.

"Let's Hear It For the Boy"

Deniece Williams 1984 Movie Scene

Although they did a cute job with how they used the bubblegum pop of Deniece Williams with a cover of "Let's Hear It For the Boy", I'm disappointed the only songs they chose to bring into the 2011 version of the Footloose O.S.T. are besides the theme song, covers of "Almost Paradise," "Holding Out For a Hero" & "Bang Your Head".

Songs in 2011 Footloose Movie

Not On Soundtrack CD

Not all songs are included on the movie's official Footloose Soundtrack 2011 CD. The White Stripes, Three Six Mafia and Whiz Khalifa are featured in the film but not on the OST album.

The rap song that plays in the parking lot as Ren pulls up on his first day of school that's not included on The Footloose O.S.T. is "Black and Yellow" by Whiz Khalifa. If you like the song and wanna do a flash mob, here's a great soul line dance choreographed out of Philly: Black and Yellow Super Slide.

When you stop down and think of the movie's tragic opening scene of which the movie's premise is built upon, a terrible car accident, this low key cover by Doveman is actually a more fitting approach with a kind of Tom Waits bare voice and piano vibe. Click on any of the songs to have a listen, it's quite good.

With a remake of Dirty Dancing green lit, can Flashdance, another great 80s dance movie really be that far behind? The redux of Fame was such as disaster that one can only hope the original choreographer, Kenny Ortega, Michael Jackson's auteur of This is It will handle with care. Ortega is attached the project as a director. Here's hoping DWTS Jennifer Grey makes a cameo appearance.
