Life without Cats...?!? (a Love Story)

I can't imagine life without cats. For all of my life it was a neverending source of joy, helping a bunch of kittens being born (many of them right in my lap ;-) ... raising them with all my love... teaching them how to use a litter box or a scratching post... or how to purr by purring myself (yes, I can ;-) ...watching them play (favorite game of a whole litter: horse-herd, favorite game of a lonely kitten: getting scared of his own reflection in the mirror)... watching them grow and turn into unique personalities, some of which were more non-judgmental friends to me than most humans. A purring cat in my lap helps me relax when stressed out... the worried expression in a cat's face when I'm sad can dry my tears and turn a smile on my face... they keep me warm in bed (though it does not even take the six of them that I once had, to warm my permanently cold feet ;-) and even all those cat-slaloms in the morning, stumbling with sleepy eyes across more cats than I actually own ;-) or their lying in clairvoyant manner on whatever I'm going to use, including my laptop (yep, that's Mousy on the right, and it looks like I'll have to finish that paragraph later ;-) or cats completely wrapped up in toilet paper (or my curtains)... all this can make me smile... and sometimes even lough out loud... and I'm sure that all cat people know exactly what I'm talking about!

Actually, the top left image shows some of my past and present friends... like the Spanish family we "smuggled" across 4 borders to Germany when the babies were just 10 days old (scroll down to "Cats have addictive Potential" to read the whole story)... or some Hawaiian cats... or the tailless Siamese mix in San Diego for whose blue eyes I fell helplessly ... and, of course, my very best friend Mikesch III, the big black guy, who used to walk with me around the block without leash, be it in Holland, Germany or Spain, always keeping in touch with his tail at my leg, determined to protect me, come what may. I created that image to express my gratitude for being a part of their lives... and if you like it, you can click this little banner to check it out on various items in my Cafepress shop

Don't get me wrong, I like dogs, too... but I really don't like walking in cold or rainy weather - not to mention snow :-( and I'm not much of an "alpha dog", so instead of needing to command all the time, I rather feel honored when my furry friend comes to me deliberately, and without barking, jumping or licking, but with just a soft leg-rub and a purr that touches my heart on the very right wavelength...

Your Significant Other is a Dog Person..?!?

Houston, we have a problem ;-)

No, I'm just kidding ;-) but my respect goes to all those who manage to overcome all those prejudices and just live in peace... be it cats & dogs, or men & women... (nobody said it would be easy)!

Those two in the picture actually do. They like to cuddle and play together and I give all the credits to the cat, as she was there first, when that new puppy arrived and chased her around the house (though I've often heard that it's easier to have an old dog and get a new kitten). So we can learn a lesson from them how to accept our fellow beings unconditionally...

But whenever there might arise some problems in understanding, just use the above greeting card to settle any upcoming disputes in a humorous way ;-)

Cats have addictive Potential...

Like Hemingway said "One cat just leads to another" ;-)

I didn't have as many cats as
Hemingway, but up to six at a time...

My big black Mikesch moved to Spain with us,
where we rented a little house that came
with a little pool and ... a cat!

Diana (as we found out she was called) was a real "Spanish Mama" with a lot of temperament... one of the feral cats fed by the guard of our community, and taking possession of whoever lived in our house... and, of course, pregnant!

After she and I had checked out all boxes we kept in the workshop, she decided that my lap actually was the perfect spot to give birth to those four little cuties that were as different as siblings can be... a black Persian with long hair, a little guy looking like a Maine Coon or Norwegian Forest Cat with soft silky hair, and two short-haired tabbies with white paws (looks like it's true that they can have different fathers ;-)

Unfortunately, we had to go back to Germany when they were just 10 days old... so we put the box with Diana and the kids into the car, and crossed four borders and 1200 miles...

They grew up happily... Diana protected them with her life, and Mikesch was the greatest uncle ever, bringing them live mice to play with... and as they adored him, they just copied whatever he did... and so we ended up walking across the fields with six cats in a row behind us... and everybody we met, just had to smile ;-)

Btw, the above design shows the four kids and is available as Stationery and BusinessCards

You're a cat smuggler (of the rescuing variety) - cool! One of my brothers arranged for a cat to come out of Africa to Seattle a number of years ago. A woman he knew while there was being posted elsewhere and couldn't take the kitty with her.

Yes, I plead guilty ;-) but who can beat Africa to Seattle!
