Orangeness

Whether you call them orange, marmalade or ginger, orange kitties are sweet cats with serious personality.

Meet the Scrapper cat

Scrapper in one of his favorite spotsThis is Scrapper kitty, also known as Scrapper doodle, Doodle bug and occasionally "idiot child" LOL! Scrapper was a kitty somone threw away and he eventually found his way to my house.

Seems people think that when they no longer want an animal that the best place to take them it out in the country and let them loose instead of taking the responsibility of finding them a new home or at least surrendering them to a shelter. The problem is, the poor critter isn't equipped to survive in the wild and in all probability won't be taken in by any home owners in the area as they most likely have all the animals they can handle.

My neighbor and I first noticed him when he started hanging around our houses. Poor thing, so skinny and such looks of longing when he saw us. But also looks of hurt and terror. We started putting food out for him, tho he wouldn't come near us. I would put the food out and and back away and talk to him quietly while he ate. Soon I was able to get closer and closer to him. Eventually I was able to sit near him while he ate and give him light scritches on his head while he are.

Soon he was coming up to me for pets and the occasional pick up and snuggle, as long as I didn't move suddenly. My plan was to get him civilized again (I believe he had a home and people and they simply decided they didn't want him anymore and abandoned the poor thing) and find him a good home once we had him edited (I refuse to call it getting him fixed, there wasn't anything broken), For some reason my hubby would just look at me and shake his head and sigh when I would say that. Honestly, I was going to find him a good home.

Silly me, should have realized it was going to be my home LOL! Even tho we already had 2 kitties who kept our hands full.

I continued to work with the little scrapper cat and soon I was bringing him into the house to learn food was there (not too mention I didn't want to feed the passing skunks and raccoons in the neighborhood) and while my kitties were not terribly happy, they grudgingly accepted the newcomer.

I discovered he loved scritches. So much so that when he was up on the perch of the kitty condo and I gave him scritches, he would wiggle around in ecstatic pleasure and would almost fall off.

He's mommy's kitty now, tho he will deign to grace my hubby with his presence now and again. He sleeps between us as often as possible and is usually curled up in my lap in the evening.

Myth & truth

Myth: all orange cats are male

Truth: if a female has the O gene on both chromosomes, she will be orange. Males only need one O gene to be orange.

Macavity - The Mystery Cat

a poem by T S Eliot

Macavity's a Mystery Cat: he's called the Hidden Paw--
For he's the master criminal who can defy the Law.
He's the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad's despair:
For when they reach the scene of crime--Macavity's not there!

Macavity, Macavity, there's no on like Macavity,
He's broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity.
His powers of levitation would make a fakir stare,
And when you reach the scene of crime--Macavity's not there!
You may seek him in the basement, you may look up in the air--
But I tell you once and once again, Macavity's not there!

Macavity's a ginger cat, he's very tall and thin;
You would know him if you saw him, for his eyes are sunken in.
His brow is deeply lined with thought, his head is highly doomed;
His coat is dusty from neglect, his whiskers are uncombed.
He sways his head from side to side, with movements like a snake;
And when you think he's half asleep, he's always wide awake.

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity,
For he's a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity.
You may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square--
But when a crime's discovered, then Macavity's not there!

He's outwardly respectable. (They say he cheats at cards.)
And his footprints are not found in any file of Scotland Yard's.
And when the larder's looted, or the jewel-case is rifled,
Or when the milk is missing, or another Peke's been stifled,
Or the greenhouse glass is broken, and the trellis past repair--
Ay, there's the wonder of the thing! Macavity's not there!

And when the Foreign Office finds a Treaty's gone astray,
Or the Admiralty lose some plans and drawings by the way,
There may be a scap of paper in the hall or on the stair--
But it's useless of investigate--Macavity's not there!
And when the loss has been disclosed, the Secret Service say:
"It must have been Macavity!"--but he's a mile away.
You'll be sure to find him resting, or a-licking of his thumbs,
Or engaged in doing complicated long division sums.

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macacity,
There never was a Cat of such deceitfulness and suavity.
He always has an alibit, or one or two to spare:
And whatever time the deed took place--MACAVITY WASN'T THERE!
And they say that all the Cats whose wicked deeds are widely known
(I might mention Mungojerrie, I might mention Griddlebone)
Are nothing more than agents for the Cat who all the time
Just controls their operations: the Napoleon of Crime!

    Dax wants me to tell Scapper Mureow and thanks for visiting his lens. It looks like Scrapper and our Pepper and Star Noir had similar experiences with homelessness. We enjoyed the stories. Lensrolling to Dax's 2 lenses.

    Now that you say that, I do remember hearing or thinking when I was younger that orange cats were usually male. And, of course, it's a myth, since I have a yummy, fat female one myself!!
