Ford Escort 1993

Ford Escort was one of the longest build models of Ford in Europe. Mark I. was first time sold in 1968 and the last model Mark VI closed the history in 2000, when it was replaced by the brand new Ford Focus.

Ford Escort Mark V was built since 1990; in September 1992 it was facelifted (Mark Vb) and ran until 1995. This model got new engines, breaks, and improved safety, and for some time returned Escort back to its position in its class.

My father bought it as 12 year old vehicle, but in perfect condition and 80 000km driven (yes, real :). While this car is totally out in continental Europe, you can still some pieces in UK and MANY pieces in Eastern Europe, where Ford Escort is one of the most usual 'beginners' cars. I have driven it thousands kilometres, reached Brussels and Vilnius, without a single problem.

The car had to be towed twice. Once a thermostat died and caused engine overheating (simple and cheap fix), the second time we accidentally damaged cables from alternator and the battery run flat. In around 150 000km clutch had to be changed, around 220 000km transmission broke down (after steady decline of its performance during the last 50 000km, so it was no surprise). While clitch change is ok, transmission destroyed in only 220 000km doesn't make a quite good impression....

Let's keep things clear - this is a legendary car, but not a great car. Weak engine, omnipresent rust, hi gas consumption, out of date safety make this car more a nostalgic piece, than a real choice.
