Design A Totally Edible Garden With Forest Gardening
Ranked #4,219 in Home & Garden, #50,919 overall
forest gardening is a permaculture based approach to organic gardening that lets you create an edible sustainable ecologically friendly garden
Do you want to be self sufficient? Do you aim to go green? Is self sufficiency a realistic goal for you and your family? Maybe having a Forest Garden will help you achieve your aim. Forest Gardening is a permaculture approach to organic gardening that was originated by Englishman Robert Hart who lived in the village of Much Wenlock Shropshire in England.
This village is very familiar to me because I grew up in Bridgnorth Shropshire, just down the road, so being a Shropshire girl I find it really exciting that a man from my home county has come up with a fascinating approach to green living.
Forest gardening is a type of sustainable agriculture that a home owner can do. The general idea is to design your garden in 'levels' that consist of trees and bushes that provide food sources for human beings. No livestock is involved. Crucial to a successful forest garden is the selection of plants, especially for temperate planting zones where plants need to be shade tolerant. Forest gardening is a form of permaculture. Permaculture is the principle of blending human settlements in a balanced way with ecology. The aim is to "to create stable, productive systems that provide for human needs, harmoniously integrating the land with its inhabitants." (wikipedia). If you want to grow your own food then why not give Forest Gardening a try?

Forest Garden Grow Fruit December 2011

We managed to raise money from local government funds and community projects. All of the work was done by volunteers and the planning and sourcing of the trees and shrubs was done by a small team from our community.
The pergola you can see will have grapes growing and the land in the background is given over to our community orchard. The orchard has lesser known traditional varieties of apples, pears, plums, cherries etc, and residents have sponsored trees with names of loved ones.

Our Forest Garden December 2011
forest garden in Nottinghamshire UK

Our community forest garden was planned as part of a community orchard and forest garden project. It is a huge circle of land divided into quadrants for different types of fruiting and nutting trees with fruit canes and other edible ground cover such as herbs. Paths run around the perimeter and through the garden.
We have enclosed the garden with a hazelnut hedge and the young garden is protected by chicken wire to resist encroachment by rabbits.

So this is the start. I wonder what it will look like in Spring!

Forest Garden Make An Edible Garden 2011

Careful planning and teamwork brought our project to life.
"For me the idea of a system
of land use capable of supplying
all basic human needs,
consisting mainly of trees
and other perennial plants
with no livestock component,
was a case of gradual evolution."
Robert Hart
"From the agroforestry point of view,
perhaps the world's most advanced
country is the Indian state of Kerala,
which boasts no fewer than
three and a half million

Kerla
The Indian State Leading The Way In Forest Gardening
Robert Hart was inspired by the forest gardens of Kerala. Almost a quarter of India's 10,000 plant species are found in Kerla. There are 900 species of medicinal plants. Designated one of the "ten paradises of the world" and "50 places of a lifetime" by the National Geographic Traveler magazine, Kerala is famous for its ecotourism initiatives.
Hart wrote "The Keralese forest gardens are very intensively planted, on several levels, like the natural forest, so that their cultivation, the processing of their products, and looking after livestock provide full-time healthy occupations for most members of the families involved, which average six to eight people."

- Forest gardening is gaining a growing fan base. It makes so much sense to use every layer of woodland, and this technique can be used small scale in a garden, too. Great lens!
