The List of Politicians Cheating on their Wives Grows Almost Daily
What do Senator Jonathan Edwards, Anthony Weiner, Governor of South Carolina Mark Sanford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Senator Larry Craig, Eliot Spitzer, President Bill Clinton, New Jersey Governor John McGreevey and many other Politicians have in common? They have all been unfaithful to their wives. Since I'm a woman, my perspective may be a little biased, I know woman aren't perfect in this area either. Having a spouse that cheats on you is extremely painful for the innocent partner. The list of unfaithful politicians who have had their name in the spotlight is longer than what I have written, and goes back further than my generation...it's a problem that has existed throughout history.
It seems like apologies by most of these politicians never come until they get caught...or news of their indiscretion is about to hit the media, then it's "I'm sorry" time. Some politicians have lied to our faces until concrete evidence proved their guilt and they could no longer deny their indiscretion. Others in our past history got away with their sin, at least in the media, because such things were just not talked about.
You're going to have a chance to sound off below, share who, what and why you do or don't believe these apologies are sincere. Does it get under your skin as much as it does mine? The list of politicians that are unfaithful to their marriage partners, whether they be wives or husbands, seems to grow daily...a sad commentary on the morality of our leaders.

Are the Apologies of Politicians Sincere?
What do you think?
This is your chance to share your feelings, vent, share a little history, however you want to approach it.
You may even have a response for both sides of the argument if you have two different people with two different stories in mind.
By the way, if you're new to this, just start typing in the space and the options will appear.
You'll also find that some good discussion is finding it's way down in the guestbook rather than up here, so don't forget to take a look.
Keep it clean, if it's possible with a topic like this, this is a "G" rated site.

Cheating Politicians - Are Their Apologies Sincere?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byYes, sometimes they are sincere (give an example if you want to):
Sylvestermouse says:
I believe the depth of sincerity in an apology depends on the individual regardless of their occupation. There are good people who make mistakes in every walk of life. Adultery and infidelity are extremely difficult for us to forgive. After all, the very act requires the ability to deceive and we no longer know what to believe. I think politician's apologies could be just as sincere as anyone else who has to face the consequences of their sin.

happynutritionist says:
Well so far, it seems most don't believe politicians are sincere, so I'll just stick something over on this side...a thought or two.
I think that if someone sincerely apologizes, you'll know it by how their life plays out after the experience. Now of course the media isn't as "into" sharing stories about someone who has repented and is now doing all they can to make up for the wrong they've done, so how will we hear about a public figure like a politician who we don't know in person, but only know through the eyes of the media and press, if they are sincere?
Posted January 24, 2010
No way, most of the time they aren't sincere (give an example if you want to..or just vent!):
tenger says:
Rarely. If they resigned completely to restore their marriages, it's one thing. If they stay in, it's very questionable. And the spouses? they love the power too. Just once I'd love to see a spouse start beating on the person who's cheated on them during the obligatory press conference. Or better yet, have the person served for divorce during that press conference.

Travis says:
Due to the power and ego that fame and publicity causes people who go into politics, it's almost impossible for any anyone in politicians to be totally faithful to their spouse or girlfriend. They'd have to have complete control of their urges and ego not to. The only politician in history that I can think of was probably totally faithful was honest Abe aka Abraham Lincoln. Everyone else, most likely not. Hopefully one day in the future there will come a person in politics who has enough morals, principals and inhibitions to be classy enough not to be unfaithful. God only knows when that day will come, but hopefully another person like Lincoln will show up.

As a rule it sure doesn't seem that Cheating Politicians are sincere when they apologize.

bethd821 says:
Cheating and politics seem to go hand in hand anymore. It's so disgusting. Lies, lies, lies, oops, aplogize. John Edwards is a perfect example of this.

Susan52 says:
I agree with kab, that they're sorry they got caught. Most of these people are highly educated and certainly old enough to know better, but they cheat, etc. anyway. You'd think they would learn from those who came before them!
Posted January 24, 2010
kab says:
Well, they are very sorry...for getting caught. They regret what they did....that led them to getting caught. My example: Spitzer.

Presidential Pursuit & Scandal of John Edwards
A sad state of affairs
John Edwards being unfaithful to Elizabeth Edwards was as sad as any situation, but to do so while she was sick, this one really struck me at the heart, and I can only hope his heart is struck, hopefully broken, over what he has done. - I am running for President in 2012 and am proud to say I have been married to my college sweetheart for 38 years this coming May. No infidelity, just love and keeping promises. As president, I would keep my promises, too. But I do refuse to get caught up in the corrupt political process which is why I am running as a write-in.

- I really like your lens. You pulled together a lot of info and have created a space for having an important discussion on something that we seem to be seeing more and more often. There are so many politicians getting into sexual crises that soon your lens will become as long as the road to Washington DC.
I don't know if you'll like it, but I have written a lens arguing for the restoration of Eliot Sptizer. I think he deserves a second chance and still has a lot to offer America today.

- I have been through adultery and come through it to a good relationship with my first husband. Adultery is something we are prone to do. If we didn't have a problem with it there wouldn't need to be a commandment forbidding it.There would be no need to say it.

- THANK YOU for sharing that...you are so right. There is not a single thing that we are tempted to look down on someone for that we aren't capable of doing ourselves..so glad to hear that you came through it with a good marriage. I have a dear dear family member who I won't mention here, but is in heaven now, who lived this out for years but his wife loved him...waited...and he came back...and was completely devoted to her for the rest of their lives...both lived into their 90's. There is forgiveness IF both parties are willing to change and work it through together, but unfortunately, that doesn't always happen. So glad it did for you.

- I think this is an excellent debate! Sadly the life of a politician is often one that requires secrecy and obfuscation. Unfortunately, these traits once learned, filter into all areas of ones life. The desire to hide or deny an ugly truth is not exclusive to a politician. It just gets covered in the news.

- great job on this debate. I never liked John Edwards because no matter what his wife said, I think he should have stayed by her side for her cancer journey and not even pursued the Presidency at all. But I only vote on job performance, not on their personal performance. Lots of people cheat and don't get caught. Are they any better?

- Thank, Heather. Yeh, it is hard to respect someone who would hurt their wife when anytime, let alone when she is already dealing with so much...an ultimate act of selfishness. I think if I had failed like that, unless I repented and completely turned the other way, it would "rub off" on my job performance...so good character does affect my vote to some degree...no one is perfect, but all of us have an opportunity to make things right, and that can take time and energy that political ambitions can distract from.

- I honestly don't care who they're diddling, as long as they are doing their job well. I don't care who the mailman is sleeping with, or the lady that works at DMV; I don't care who the guy at the bank is sleeping with or who my senator is sleeping with. Just don't go on an apology tour. I hate that.
