The Formal Garden Style
The western tradition in Landscape Design is formal or straight line and
symmetrical balance. Not until Europeans went to China in the 1700s
was there an informal or naturalistic style. It was in the last 16th Century
that European Garden Makers and builders embraced the China Style or
what came to be call Chinoiserie. This naturalistic style has been widely
used in the U.S.A.

An exercise in Geometry for The Home Garden
from the house. You design using straight lines
mimicing the house, outbuildings, lot lines, and
street. If you want a lot of detail you create patterns of geometrical forms. Usually the pattern
is furnished in plants, gravel, or compost. Walkways
are positioned through the garden of squares, rectangles, or circles. Each gardening picture is
visually divided in half, with each half being a
mirror image.
In small lots in cities and towns, the formal design
usually looks better. In the country, around the house usually looks better with formal design with
naturalistic areas created around the boundaries to
the surrounding areas.
