Getting There

Formentera is the smallest of Spain's Balearic islands, and the one that has best retained its stunning natural beauty. Formentera Migjorn, or Platja de Migjorn, is just one of the beautiful beaches that you will find if you decide to make this place your holiday destination.

Platja de Migjorn stretches for six kilometers along the island's southern coastline. It doesn't have the still waters of the Northern coastline, but it has some great natural beauty and is great for water sports such as sailing and windsurfing. On a calm day you can see that the waters here are just as turquoise as elsewhere on the island.

To get to Platja de Migjorn you just head along the PM820 highway which dissects the island and turn off at any of the small roads leading to the beach. Most of the areas are completely undeveloped and unspoiled, but if you are in search of a hotel then you should stick to the eastern and western ends of the beach.

More than a Beach

Not only is there beautiful beaches, and azure waters, but there is also the opportunity to walk behind the dunes that protect the coastline. You'll spot some birds if you are lucky, and you will definitely spot some lizards - you don't need to be lucky to come across Podarcis pityusensis, the Pitiusan lizard, or sargantana as it is known locally. This is a small lizard that has more than 30 different subspecies.

One of the great things about Platja de Migjorn is the fact that you can just walk across to Platja de Tramuntana if you need to follow the sun, or just fancy a change of pace. As with most beaches in Formentera you will see you fair share of naturists, and by the end of their holidays most people have decided that naked is the way to go!

Formentera has plenty of other beaches to explore, and places of interest, but Formentera Migjorn should certainly be on your list of places to visit. Even though it is undeveloped you will always find a beach side bar in strolling distance, serving up a cool, refreshing Estrella Damm to keep you refreshed in the baking sun.

However, those longing for a more get-away-from-it-all holiday vibe often opt for a trip to Spain's Balearic Islands, an archipelago made up of four islands, Majorca, Ibiza, Minorca and the slightly lesser known island of Formentera.
