Very good information. Nicely done, thank you very much!

I love the thing on the front about preventing birds crashing into the windows. This has happened in our first floor flat (apartment) - we have trees outside the window, and a bird has struck our window more than once.

This is really awesome! I have never made my own suet before. I will certainly have to give it a try.

    Enjoyed the photos. Nicely done.

This is a great recipe, and I'm definitely going to use it for my woodpeckers this winter. In fact, chickadees, nuthatches, and blue jays are very fond of suet here in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. I also have yellow-bellied woodpeckers that love suet and any peanut butter they can find. I usually mix peanut butter and black oil sunflower seed and roll pine cones in it. Great fun to see the birds enjoy these treats. Thank you for the recipe.

Your love for birds is obvious. I never even knew you could make your own suet. Great Job! Btw, I think a suet feeder is a great project for me to build in my garage and make a lense about :)
  • dustytoes Apr 28, 2011 @ 10:33 am | delete
Yes! Do it... and I'll add a link here ;) ... thanks!

Feeding the birds in the winter is important.

Very educational! I'm sure the birds in your area appreciate it, too, with this tough winter. Thanks and **angel blessed**!
  • DecoratingforEvents Jan 22, 2011 @ 9:50 am | delete
Excellent how-to Pam! This sounds easy and will keep our feathered friends happy in the cold weather and snow!
  • Jimmie Jan 22, 2011 @ 9:40 am | delete
We have loads of birds in the backyard where we are staying. Would LOVE to do this.
  • WordCustard Jan 22, 2011 @ 7:33 am | delete
An excellent way to help birds make it through the winter. I can't imagine what it must be like to be visited by bears though! Thanks for sharing your own suet recipes and I enjoyed your pictures too.

Thanks for the information! I am favoriting, lensrolling, and blessing!

We just made our own suet but we used bacon grease. It was so much fun and the birds love it! This is a great lens. I just featured it on my bird craft lens.

Good place to find out how to make one's own suet. :)

Great lens. I am lensrolling this over to my Tennessee Bird Drawings lens.

Do you know, that we are seriously plagued by the "rats for Christmas?" They have overtaken the bird feeders! Ah, rats!
  • BirdLady Nov 25, 2010 @ 2:09 pm | delete
Can someone tell me if there is a recipe for suet that doesnt freeze in winter. I noticed that my woodpeckers and chickadees, are having alot of trouble getting any of the frozen suet, i buy the store bought stuff is homemade any better?
  • dustytoes Nov 26, 2010 @ 9:12 am | delete
My birds don't seem to have any trouble eating it frozen, in fact I put the homemade stuff out right from my freezer. And I do think that the homemade is better. My birds go through it so fast that I must supplement with store bought though.
  • mcochs Nov 16, 2010 @ 7:07 pm | delete
Great lens! I love feeding the birds. I would like to try a birdbath heater also, but have nowhere to plug it in.
  • Scientific_Homeschooler Nov 13, 2010 @ 3:48 pm | delete
I love making my own suet! I liked your idea of using beef fat and will be sure to use it this winter!! Thanks for a great resource. :D
  • Vladi Nov 9, 2010 @ 6:12 pm | delete
Interesting to read about the weather conditions. I didn't know you had to feed birds to keep them going, where I live they steal my kibble in broad daylight.
  • poddys Oct 14, 2010 @ 10:07 am | delete
Great ideas, maybe if we made our own suet the birds would eat it. We put out 3 suet balls in nets a year ago, and the birds in our garden just ignore them completely.
  • JoyfulPamela Sep 19, 2010 @ 12:44 pm | delete
What a wonderful idea to make your own! My children will enjoy this. I'm adding this as a feature on my bird lens. :D Thanks!
  • naturegirl7 Mar 22, 2010 @ 11:50 am | delete
I'm back to say that your wonderful suet lens has been featured on an Early Spring Nature Walk ( http://www.squidoo.com/early-spring-nature-walk ).

This is great information for any bird lover, I am lensrolling this to the Birds in my Backyard lens. Well done!
  • JuneMary Feb 19, 2010 @ 6:47 pm | delete
Must make your suet blocks -they sound better than the bought ones.
I have my waterfall operating for half an hour several times through the day. It provides water for the birds and keeps an open section in the pond.
  • Kimsworld Feb 3, 2010 @ 7:24 pm | delete
My mom feeds the birds year round, She used to put the suet blocks out, but not so much anymore. I feed them as well, but she is much more consistent. They love her more than they do me!
  • wilddove6 Jan 15, 2010 @ 1:11 am | delete
    What a great lens!
I used to make my own suet all of the time...and you're right...the birds adore it!
We now live in an area where it stays pretty warm, and rains a lot, rather than freezes, so I find the "no melt" suets a bit better where we are now.
I've never seen the suet feeders with the tail prop...nifty!
And thanks for highlighting Project Feeder Watch...I've done it for many years, and it's a great contribution!
    Wing high five!
  • HorseAndPony Jan 3, 2010 @ 6:50 pm | delete
We love feeding and watching the birds. We have not started feeding at our new location because of the Black Bears but we will for the bird count this winter. Great lens. Loved your bear print.

We feed the birds from late November through April. I have the same feeder collection as you, plus a few more. I, too, make my own suet ... great way to use up the extra nuts and cereal bits around our kitchen. The finches absolutely love the thistle socks we put out for them, and we have a window ledge feeder my dad made installed in our garage window. It's got one-way glass so we can get up close and watch the cardinals eat from the tray without scaring them away.

This is a really excellent lens, very informative. Feeding birds in the winter can really make a difference to some species' survival. I have lensrolled this to bunch of my birdwatching lenses.
  • Vladi May 23, 2009 @ 12:23 am | delete
I like this idea. Of course, I can only look upon the feathered ones these days, but I have long ago memories of more than bird-watching.
  • dazsgeo May 9, 2009 @ 1:20 pm | delete
Great tips on feeding suet. I'll have to try your recipe this fall. I have the book by Sally Roth and highly recommend it (and any other book she has written).
  • kiwisoutback Feb 19, 2009 @ 2:53 pm | delete
Ah, so that's how they do it...I haven't done this myself, but my wife was telling me about how she used to make her own suet cakes for birds. Nice work!

We have wild blueberries all over our yard (which is in the woods btw), so we get bears come right up into the yard, but they usually leave the bird feeders alone, because they are too busy eating the blueberries off all of our bushes. Squirrels, are the ones who make a mess of our feeders, by chewing the bottoms off and thus dumping the seed on the ground. I cure this problem by putting whole corn on the ground under the feeders and they eat the corn an leave the feeders alone.

Nice hints on making suet feeders. My birds appreciate your lens immensely.

Great lens and an important statement at the beginning as once you start feeding the birds be prepared to stick with it.

This is a very interesting and informative lens. And your food photos, as usual, (even though...I know...it's bird food) make me HUNGRY! Hahaha. Seriously, you've done an excellent job putting this all together. I'll be back. Right now, though, I am off to give you some stars.
  • naturegirl7 Dec 13, 2008 @ 7:31 am | delete
Very nice lens. We use a similar recipe, but leave the suet mix up most of the year, because we don't have bears down here in S. Louisiana. Raccoons will steal the whole feeder, though, if we don't place it out of their reach. Welcome to the Naturally Native Squids group. Don't forget to add your lens link to the appropriate plexo and vote for it.

Thanks for helping to identify the first unknown bird on www.squidoo.com/identify-birds . We now have a new unknown bird, so, please com back and try to identify it. This is a very nice lens and hope lots of people make suet for the birds. 5* and lensroll .
