Superstitions Surrounding Fortune Cookies
Here are some superstitions that abound about Fortune Cookies. Since they are contradictory you can take your pick.
If you choose to believe it, it is so.
-You must eat the entire cookie in order for your fortune to come true.
-If the fortune seems unlucky don't eat the cookie.
-You must read the fortune before any of the cookie is eaten.
-The entire cookie must be eaten before reading the fortune.
- Some people believe you must silently read your fortune...like "wishes" when blowing out birthday candles.
-Other people follow specific rules in the selection of the cookie. You must close your eyes when you select the cookie. Choose the cookie that seems to be pointing directly towards you. After you select your cookie you must pass it on to another person at the table.
Whether you actually eat it or not, is not important. It's the "fortune" inside that matters.

Debated History Of The Fortune Cookie
The actual history, and place of origin, of this little cookie is steeped in a bit of controversy. Did you know that despite their association with Chinese culture, fortune cookies, as American culture recognizes them, were seemingly invented in California?
One possible place of origin begins in China. In the 13th and 14th century China was occupied by the Mongols. Chu Yuan Chang was a patriotic revolutionary who planned an uprising against the Mongols. The date of the uprising was hidden in a message which was placed in a 'Moon Cake'.
The uprising was successful and the Ming Dynasty was born.
A tradition was born of giving cakes with messages and a Moon Festival became a regular celebration.
This may be what inspired the Chinese 49'ers who worked on the construction of the great American Railways through the Sierra Nevada to California. They did not have cakes for their Moon Festival, but biscuits were available. Improvising was necessary and the Fortune Cookie was born.
Some claim that David Jung invented the fortune cookie in 1918. David was a Chinese immigrant living in Los Angeles and the founder of the Hong Kong Noodle Company. They say David was concerned about the poor people that he saw in the streets near his shop. He created a cookie which contained an inspirational verse written by the local Presbyterian minister. He distributed the little cookie amongst them for free.
Another story claims Mokota Hagiwara invented the fortune cookie in San Fransisco in 1914. Makota designed the famous Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. The mayor at that time fired Mokota and as a result he suffered a great deal of hardship. He was later re-instated by a new mayor. Thankful to those who had stood by him during those rough times he created a cookie that contained a "thank-you" note. They became quite popular and were displayed at the San Fransisco, Panama-Pacific Exhibition in 1915.
Both San Fransisco and Los Angeles lay claim to the origin of the cookie. The Court of Historical Reviews and Appeals ruled that San Francisco is the rightful "fortune cookie capital of the world" in 1983. Los Angeles politicians condemned that decision, believing the honor should have gone to their city. Obviously both men and the 49'ers contributed to the creation of the fortune cookie that we know and love today.
