Forum Trolls & Whiners

Ranked #9,638 in Business & Work, #234,718 overall

A Definition of "Forum Troll"

A "Forum Troll" is a person who posts outrageous message to provoke people to respond. The Forum Troll delights in sowing discord within a forum.  A troll is someone who inspires flaming rhetoric, someone who is deliberately controvertial, baiting and pulling people into a "flaming" discussion.  Flaming discussions usually end with name calling, a flame war and at best a locked thread or in extreme cases a deleted thread.

Forum Trolls & What To Do About Them

It's Time To Take A Stand Against Forum Trolls...

Visit any of the top Internet Marketing Forums and you'll soon come across a Forum Troll - someone who just wants to stir up trouble - and those people who whine and complain because making money requires effort and they want to lifestyle but not the work.

Enter "Forum Know How" a new forum where you pay a small one off annual fee (currently only $48) to become a member and where trolls, whiners and negative people are not welcome.

Are You Sure They Are Trolls?

One of the most common explanations for the name Forum Troll could be that it was taken from the Troll in Norwegian folklore; a slow, stupid and often rabble-rousing ogre.

Recently, the term forum troll has developed into an excuse for using Master Suppression Techniques on opponents in forum disputes. By calling someone a forum troll, you give yourself and others a reason to ignore, mock, blame and withhold information from your opponent, despite the fact that the person has done nothing wrong.

Many people have been forced into exile from the a forum Community simply because they have been falsely accused of forum trolling.

Before jumping to conclusions, and accusing someone of being a forum troll, be sure to check your facts!

Spam Often Features On The Forum Menu

There's another kind of low-life who will visit your forum. This is the "Forum Spammer" this guy is only interested in one thing... He want's to fill your forum with posts that include his links.

It doesn't matter what your forum rules say about including hyperlinks in posts or in forum signatures, because he's so busy spamming forums that he doesn't have the time to read the rules!

The forum spammer will litter affiliate links in his posts, he'll try to game the system by using throw away domains with redirects. He'll include links to any type of site that will make him money.

Whatever you do, Do Not Click A Forum Spammers Link!

You could very easily end up with a screen full of pop-up windows, you'll probably end up with a ton of cookies being downloaded to your PC or, worse still, you could even have your PC infected with Adware, viruses or trojans.

You have been warned.

And, if you are a forum spammer... Get a life and a job you dumbass!

Don't Feed The Trolls

Leave It To The Moderator

Trolling is a form of harassment that can completely monopolize a forum discussion.

Well meaning defenders can create chaos simply by responding to trolls. The more responses a troll gets the more ammunition he has to stir things up further.

The best response is to ignore a troll starve them of the food they live on, or to report a message to a forum moderator. Most moderators will usually delete troll messages or simply delete their accounts.

When Did It All Start?

An early recorded example

One early reference to troll found in the Google Usenet archive was by user "John Miller," directed toward the user "Tad," on February 8, 1990.

Nobody knows for sure if this instance represents the use of "troll" as it is applied today, or if it was simply a chance choice of epithet. Whatever, I like the thinking behind the response...

"You are so far beyond being able to understand anything anyone here says that this is just converging on uselessness. The really sad part is that you really believe that you're winning. You are a shocking waste of natural resources - kindly re-integrate yourself into the food-chain. Just go die in your sleep you mindless flatulent troll."

I particularly like the use of the word "Flatulent" :)

i agree with what you've said. however i think the act of 'trolling' goes beyond the frustration and annoyance of the receiver getting unwanted feedbacks. putting it in the social context, trolling should be taken more seriously as a type of offence. after all, just because it occurs in cyber space doesn't mean there shouldn't be any consequences associated right? i've read several articles where teenagers, upon receiving troll's comments have actually committed suicide. isn't this crime? but they get away with it which i don't think is just.

Great post, John. As a long-time usenet/forum participant, I've come across a few too many of these loathsome creatures. Aside from being annoying, though, they do sometimes elicit some creative thumping from "the regulars". Thanks for shining a light on their dark world.

Being a forum owner, yes, I love the description, trolls, they can be exhausting and run rampant on many forums. As a forum owner you really need to learn how to diplomatically put them in their place without sounding like a troll yourself. The right words and it only takes one message to silence those troll fingers.

Very interesting lens, I'd been on forums for a while before I'd first heard a reference to a trolling, couldn't figure out for sure wat they were talking about. First thought was trolling (as in fishing) for links (i figured it out later).

Pretty interesting to hear where the term first came from. Good researching. Gave you a 5

    Hi John,
AWESOME! Great job you're doing at the WF and now this.
I always thought of forum trolls from the fishing definition of the word. Now combine that with your definition and picture your troll in a boat trolling in a lake with all the fish laughing at it.
