Even though there are various ways for you to try to increase traffic to your website and increase your rankings in the main search engines, one of the best ways to do both is by taking advantage of the power of online forums. Regardless of what your website or blog is about, most likely there will be a forum dedicated to the topic. The only thing you have to do is find it. But for those of you who searched and couldn't find a decent forum to post on, there's always one type of forum that you could use, and thats SEO forums. SEO forums lets you talk about all things related to websites and the best part about it is that you can put a link to your website or blog in your signature. Doing this benefits you in 2 ways:
1. It allows you to get a backlinks with your desired anchor text (which is vital for ranking) &
2. It allows other visitors to click on your link and visit your site potentially turning into some type of revenue for you.

But before you go posting your link on every website you can find, here's a few tips. Some forums have a plugin called "rel nofollow" enabled. Basically its a feature that tells the search engines not to count your link as a backlink. That sucks doesn't it? But fortunately there are more sites without it enabled so it's not really a big deal. You can search your favorite search engine for the term "forums dofollow list" for tons of lists that various people put together. Be sure to post on as many forums with a pagerank of atleast 2 to take full advantage of the backlink power. You're usually allowed to add 2 -3 links in your sig, but it all depends on the what the admin decides.

Also, another good thing to do is before you post on a certain thread, be sure that the page is indexed in the main 3 search engines first. It wouldn't make much sense to post on a thread thats not indexed because the search engines doesn't even know it exist. Avoid posting on threads thats not indexed because obviously it's not indexed for a reason (just my personal preference). Also, to avoid having your comments deleted, be sure to leave a comment that actually adds something useful to the conversation. Don't just put "wow, thats cool" or "great post". When moderators see posts like those they start getting suspicious, especially if you're a new member to the site.

Another thing worth mentioning is that due to ignorant spammers, alot of forum moderators do not like financial websites at all. So if your website is about insurance or loans, you may need some luck trying to keep your signature up. This bias towards financial sites varies greatly, so don't hesitate to add a financial site to your sig because most likely it wont be a problem. And lastly, i would like to stress to you the importance of leaving a great comment or post. It's important because not only would you gain a good reputation on the site, but more importantly, the number of people clicking the link in your sig will increase.

Here's a quick summary about the "ranking factor" of getting backlinks. For example, lets just say your're ranked #3 for the keyword "green apples" and you only have 10 links to your site. And the guy who's ranked #2 has 14 links. Theoretically, all you would need is 5 good forum links to take over the #2 spot. Now of course there are other factors that go into getting ranked, but alteast by getting more links than your competition, you can check that off your list. Thats the great thing about thinking "outside the box" and getting backlinks in various ways to increase your rank.
