Pendleton's Friends of the Park

FRIENDS OF THE PARK (FOTP)
Pendleton, South Carolina

Friends of the Park meets every third Monday at 6 pm at Pendleton United Methodist Church in the social hall. Everyone who is interested in the future of our Veterans Park is invited to attend.
Friends of the Park is an organized group of Pendleton area citizens interested in making Veterans Park the best it can be. Friends of the Park is governed by Pendleton Pride In Motion, a 501C3 organization and works closely with the Town of Pendleton which owns the land and with Pendleton Recreation Association which provides youth sports. PPIM has been hoping that Friends of the Park will become strong enough to be an independent organization. That day is just about here as we have already applied for our own 501c3 status.

Friends of the Park was organized after an amazing community effort was made to build Barrett's Place Playground. In 2005 over $180,000 was raised and over 1600 volunteers participated in the five day build of Barrett's Place.

Friends of the Park is committed to continued improvements and additions to the Veterans Park Recreation Area.

"I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live." George Bernard Show

Duke Energy Donates $1,000 to Barrett's Place Playground

Press Release

DUKE ENERGY DONATES MONEY TO BARRETT'S PLACE PLAYGROUND

Jason Walls of Duke Energy met with representatives from Pendleton Pride In Motion and Friends of the Park on December 30, 2008 at Barrett's Place Playground. He proudly presented a check in the amount of $1,000 to the playground from Duke Energy. Children, Parents and Grandparents who were playing in the Playground joined in the celebration. Mr. Wall's handed out red Duke Energy Volunteer T-shirts to the children and made a big hit to all those present. Duke Energy is no stranger to Barrett's Place Playground, a playground built by more than 1600 community volunteers in 2005. Duke Energy believes in giving back to the community and they were very involved in the beginning with making this dream come true.

In the past three years, volunteers and generous donors have continued to work to make Veterans Park the best it can be. The Playground Area now has three Picnic Shelters which are rented for Birthday Parties and other gatherings. The proceeds from the rental allows the Town Of Pendleton to maintain the playground on a daily basis. The organized group of volunteers, Pendleton Pride In Motion's Friends of The Park, gather together twice a year to do the bigger maintenance jobs and keep the playground safe and long lasting for generations to come. The money that was so generously donated by Duke Energy will be used to help make the Playground even better. They also plan to provide volunteers for the Spring Maintenance Day. PPIM, Friends of the Park, and the Town of Pendleton are most appreciative of all their help.

Veterans Park has continued to improve over the past years with the recent completion of the Pavilion which houses a concession area, office for Pendleton Recreation Association, and rest rooms. Trotter's Trail has also been a welcomed addition and plans are in the making to complete the entrance to the trail in 2009.

The main fundraiser for Friends of the Park is the Freedom Fest which is held at Veterans Park on the Saturday before July 4. Their next meeting is planned for January 19, 2009 at Pendleton United Methodist Church at 6 pm and all interested citizens are urged to attend and get involved in making Veterans Park the best it can be.

Thank You, Bi-Lo

We were one of many worthwhile organizations to receive monies from Bi-Lo Charities. We would like to thank Amber Barnes for all her hard work on the Grant. Even though this is far from the amount we requested, we do appreciate it very much.

Friends of the Park received a check for $740.00.

Yard Sale Raises $1,217 for Veterans Park

Fran Butler's family worked very hard this past weekend holding a Yard Sale at Fran's home. They wanted the money to go to Friends of the Park for Veterans Park because they knew that is what their dad would have wanted.

Friends of the Park is very grateful to Fran's family for this generous contribution and this money will be used wisely in his memory.

Thank you!

In Memory Of Fran Butler

Passed Away October 25, 2008

I had often seen Caroline Jamieson and Fran Butler walking around town. They always looked so happy that I would usually take a second look. It wasn't until we started the build for Barrett's Place that I actually got to know him. He was one of a group of men who showed up weeks ahead of the build week to get everything ready. There was a lot of pre-work that had to be done and Fran was there. He continued to volunteer with the group of "granddads" who got together periodically to do maintenance at the Playground and at Trotter's Trail. Fran didn't miss many Friends of the Park Meetings and was always willing to help where needed. He helped with fundraising by selling merchandise at many events.

Fran was known for being our "Uncle Sam" at the 2008 Freedom Fest and did a super job for Friends of the Park.

Fran Butler made a difference in Pendleton and I am proud to have known him. He will be missed!

Memorial Service Tuesday October 28 at 6:30 at Cox Hall - Clemson Little Theatre
The Memorial Service held by Clemson Little Theatre was a beautiful tribute to a Great Man!

Fran's sons and their families are having a yard sale Friday and Saturday and want to donate the money to Veterans Park. This is such a wonderful thought on their part and greatly appreciated. Please come to 603 Bailey Ave Fri and Sat beginning at 8 a.m.

This was made by lensmaster Janusz. Thank you!

Thank You, Dan Jepson

Pendleton Pride In Motion honors Dan Jepson

Partners for a Healthier Community made themselves available to Pendleton and its citizens to seek ways to help improve the health and quality of life for our small town. Through a series of personal interviews and group meetings the needs of the community were assessed. With Partners support and guidance Pendleton Pride in Motion (PPIM) was formed and four main areas of interest were identified: Communication/Advocacy; Beautification; Community Progress & Planned Growth and Education/Social Services/Health. This active group began work to improve Pendleton through these areas. PPIM partnered with other groups to bring programs into the schools, health screenings and flu shots to the community, safe neighborhoods and many other initiatives. Our biggest project was to build Barrett's Place Playground at Veterans Park and to establish Friends of the Park to ensure future growth and improvements to that facility.

Throughout all this, Partners' employee, Dan Jepson, has kept our feet to the fire to achieve our goals. His expertise and knowledge has guided us to truly make a difference in Pendleton. Effective October 1, Partners for a Healthy Community will combine forces with United Way of Anderson County, but Dan will not transition with the move and his employment with Partners for a Healthy Community will end. Sadly, we lose the "glue" that held us together for over 5 years.

We feel it's appropriate to show our appreciation of all Dan has done for PPIM and the town of Pendleton. A reception for him was held at the Guard House on the village green at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22. Many people showed up to express their appreciation to all that Dan has done for Pendleton. History of Friends of the Park

Veterans Park in Pendleton SC

In February, 2005 a group called Pendleton Pride In Motion decided they wanted to build a community playground. Upon completion of Barrett's Place Playground in October 2005 a need was seen for an organization to continue to work for the betterment of Veterans Park. Friends of the Park was formed the following year and volunteers maintain the playground and have recently completed Trotter's Trail. FOTP also works closely with the Town of Pendleton who own the land and with Pendleton Recreation Association who provide youth sports on the fields at Veterans Park. The town has a beautiful plan in place for the park which include Basketball Courts, Volleyball Court, Tennis Courts, Ampitheatre, and a Veterans Memorial.

Town of Pendleton

BARRETT'S PLACE PLAYGROUND

In Memory of Barrett Beck

Pendleton Pride in Motion sponsored the building of this playground in memory of Barrett Beck, a twelve year old Pendleton resident who tragically lost his life too young, and other young people in our community whose lives we want to remember. Through volunteer efforts and donations, the Pendleton area community built a playground without tax dollars.
This large playground includes a climbing wall, campsite, speed boat and lots of swings, slides and monkey bars. This children's activity place stimulates the imagination, while providing a safe and attractive area for our children to play.

Leathers and Associates was the group that was hired to help us with our community built playground. They were wonderful!
BRICKS R US
Bricks R Us is the company we used for our personalized pavers at the entrance to Barrett's Place Playground. This was a wonderful fundraiser which continues to go on.
ROB GENTRY POTTERY
Rob Gentry made the beautiful hand print tiles at the entrance to the playground. This was another fundraiser.

TROTTER'S TRAIL

In Memory of Justin Trotter

The new "walking trail" will be named Trotter's Trail in memory of Justin Trotter. Justin was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 12 while a student at Riverside Middle School. In September 2004, after a 2 ½ years, Justin lost his battle at the young age of 15. His love for nature and the outdoors has inspired friends, family and FRIENDS OF THE PARK to honor his memory by building this 1400 foot long trail that will wind through the woods adjacent to Barrett's Place Playground. It has park benches, a bridge and is handicapped useable. The 6 foot wide trail has an asphalt surface for easy mobility and is wide enough for two wheelchairs. The entrance and landscaping are the next things to do toward its completion but it already is enjoyed by many.

THE NEW PAVILION

Completed 2008

The new Pavilion houses the Concessions stands, restrooms and the PRA office. It also has a beautiful observation deck overlooking the whole park. Teri Sloan and Amber Barnes did some beautiful painting inside the restrooms.

VETERANS MEMORIAL

In honor of all our Veterans

Veterans Day, November 11, 2007, was a special day for the citizens of Pendleton. We not only honored our veterans of past and present, but also unveiled the future Veteran's Memorial design. A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the corner site of Veterans Park, where the "Pathway to Peace" tribute will be installed.

The Veterans Memorial committee of Friends of the Park, along with the Town of Pendleton, is committed to seeing this monumental dream come true. If you would like to help, please call Joan Kelly, chairperson, at 225-1025

FREEDOM FEST

A Fundraising Event for Veterans Park

Freedom Fest '08 was a big success thanks to all our many sponsors and volunteers. We estimate that about 2,000 people were there to "salute our heroes", eat great hot dogs and hamburgers, watermelon, snow cones and homemade baked goods. They also enjoyed Bingo, Horseshoes, Childrens Inflatables, Face Painting, Fun Merchandise and more. They received a free balloon and a button when they walked Trotter's Trail and they won great prizes at The Great American Turtle Hunt held at Barrett's Place Playground! It was a time to be proud to be an American and especially proud to be a Pendletonian!

This is an outstanding example of what a community can do! Actually, I was "on site" for some of the Barett's Place Playground Construction, and oh, was I ever impressed with the volunteer sector of the Pendleton area. The dedication of volunteers and the support of businesses, big and small, add up to "goal accomplished!" A major feat! Congrats...
