Foundation For Oily Or Acne Prone Skin

Ranked #6,753 in Fashion & Beauty, #103,013 overall

I have very oily skin, and I'm a bit of a makeup junkie, so naturally I'm mixing the two together :)

Has anyone out there besides me suffered with acne and/or oily skin since puberty struck? Or ordered products off the TV commercials and bought countless zit creams? And then when those products aren't successful you go on to buy make-up to cover up the problem?! That is my life in a nutshell! In fact I took it one step further and dropped out of college and signed up for beauty school instead. One year later I became a licensed esthetician in 2005. I've now made my obsession with clear skin, and make-up my career. My goal is to help others out there like me make informed choices and save you all time and money

Foundation shopping 101

I'm sure all of you already know there are tons and tons of foundations available out in the market place at any given moment on any given day. For most of us that brings up the question which product is going to work best for my skin type? This especially rings true for people with a tendency to become oily or even break out with the dreaded acne.

The first thing to know when looking for foundation is most makeup companies label their products based on different skin types. Your best bet is to check the labels for descriptions with normal, oily, combination and dry. Why is it important to look for these you ask? For one the main ingredient in liquid foundation is usually water, but they often include some type of oil, and for those of us with already oily skin we don't need extra oil.

To find a foundation that helps control oil look for ingredients like serecite, silica and kaolin clay. Zinc oxide, green tea and chamomile is good for soothing inflamed skin from breakouts.

Avoid pore clogging ingredients such as bismuth oxychloride and dimenthicone. These tend to be found more often in powder based foundations.

Alcohol also isn't good for oily or acne prone skin, these will dry out your skin, but not in a good way and cause you to produce more oil.

For time's sake I broke down the foundation family into three seperate groups; mineral, liquid and cream.

Mineral foundations are the most wearable and breathable of the foundation options for your skin. Mineral Foundation is makeup produced using pigment found in the earth as opposed to synthetic products. Because of this the minerals will not clog your pores, and with the makeup being finely ground powder it will help absorb excess oil. They are hypoallergenic, fragrance, and dye free so great for people with allergies.

Liquid foundation is the most common type of foundation because they work for practically everyone. Liquid foundation gives a good, smooth, and even coverage with very little work. Liquids can range from sheer all the way up to full coverage. They also often have extra perks like skin reflecting pigments that give you a "soft" look which works to draw the eye away from problem areas. Some also have fruit acids that exfoliate your skin and reduce uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation (the red marks left after a breakout). And most of all they are some of the most long wearing and oil controlling products out there for oily skinned people.

Cream foundation or sometimes known as stick foundation is the thickest of the foundations and has the most coverage of all them all. The problem with most is that the cream foundation is very heavy on the skin causing a caked on look. On the good side they are also your best bet if you have an existing case of acne or a severe break out you want to cover up. The cream also has all the great qualities as the liquids do, and some have even more. Green tea is a common cream ingredient which soothes the skin and decreases inflammation from breakouts.

The varities of the foundation family is endless, what I've listed is just the beautyberg. In my blog I'm looking forward to exploring and trying a great many products to come!
