Healthy Living Tips - My Quest

Ranked #33,592 in Healthy Living, #445,584 overall

Healthy Living isn't about the scale...

There is a time when I thought that healthy living had more to do with the number on the scale than anything else. But now I'm not so sure. The more obsessed I am with that number, the harder it is to get the sucker to budge. But when I'm in balance... well that's another story entirely. When I'm in balance I ignore the scale for weeks then suddenly notice that my pants are looser. But, how do you get yourself to this point if you aren't already there?

That's what this lens is about. I am going to help you learn how to embrace healthy living without stressing out. You'll be effortlessly in balance and you'll feel healthy with plenty of energy. It's all about taking care of your body. This is exactly how to get there.

Drink Plenty of Water

Avoid Dehydration for Optimimum Health

Gearing up to write this section made me realize I was thirsty. So I got up and downed a half a glass. I'm sipping the other half as I write.

Truth 1: Our Bodies are Made of Water

Water is so important to your overall state of health. We're made up of water (I think it's something like 70%) and providing our system with fresh water constantly is essential to boosting our overall state of health. That's why it's so good for the metabolism.

Truth 2: Not Everyone Needs the Same Amount

The common thinking is that drinking 8 cups a day is enough, but some people need more and some people need less. Instead of worrying about how much, just pay attention. Drink a glass before you eat breakfast and before bed, and at each meal, and in between whenever you get a hankering. Your body will help you sort out how much you need.

Truth 3: You May Even Lose Weight!

When you are getting enough you'll have plenty of energy, your skin will look great, and you may even start losing weight! Dehydration drops our metabolism and being well hydrated boosts it. This is a simple way to help encourage your body to work properly which in the long term helps you drop the excess weight.

Make Sure Your Water is Clean and Healthy with this Brita Filter

Best Water Filter

The water that came out of the faucet at my college dorm was filled with chlorine - I could smell it! Ew! So I did some research and discovered that Brita filters did a pretty good job of getting the chlorine out. If your water is basically okay, this simple filtration system will get it tasting extra good. Keep it in the fridge so you'll always have cold water on hand!

This Brita filter is easy to use and you can keep it in the fridge. It cleans out any impurities and gets the water tasting wonderful. I love it - I think everyone should have a Brita. The cartridges are easy to replace, too (and cheap).

Change your Brita filter often for best results!

Check with the manufacturer to figure out how often you need to change it. If the filter is old it could do more harm than good.

Clean out the Pantry and Refrigerator for Optimal Health

A Simple Task for Living Healthfully but Very Necessary

There are several reasons why this works. First, it gives you the chance to know where everything is. I've had food go bad. When both the fridge and pantry are a mess, I just don't feel like cooking! Then I eat poorly. Not good.
  1. Get rid of all the "bad for you" foods. I don't keep junky foods in the house. If I do have a hankering for say, chocolate, I buy a small amount. I also don't keep things like sugary cereals and cookies in the cupboards. While I believe in balance and not depriving myself of things I want, like an ice cream cone, I don't believe in having these things every night. It's all about balance. :)
  2. Throw away anything that has gone bad. It may seem obvious but I'm telling you, it is worth it to scrutinize. I once accidentally ate eggs (in avgolemono - a Greek chicken soup that uses tempered eggs) and I was sick for the next few days with stomach cramping (and other bowel ickiness) and a fairly high fever. I thought I had swine flu until I remembered the eggs. Ew.
  3. Scrub things down. Everything is out of the fridge and pantry anyway. Scrub it down before you put things back. Or just move things around and give the surface a once over. Things can happen in the fridge like spilled syrup, ketchup stains, and raw meat that drips down. All of these things are gross and affects your inspiration is a chef. :)
