Fountain Pens
Fountain pens have also always been prized as works of art. Ornate pens are sometimes made of precious metals and jewels with cloisonné designs; others are inlaid with lacquer designs in a process known as maki-e. An avid community of pen enthusiasts collect and use antique and modern pens and also collect and exchange information about old and modern inks, ink bottles, and inkwells. Collectors often tend to prize being able to actually use the antiques, instead of merely placing them under glass for show.

Namiki
Namiki came to fame in the early 20th Century when Dunhill retailed their items in the west. This partnership has continued to the present day (occasionally Namiki make a Limited Edition for Dunhill) although now Namiki is owned by another writing instrument company, Pilot. Namiki's higher ranges included the "Emperor", "Ukari Royal", and "Ukari", their lower ranges include the "Nippon Tradition" range (screen printed work on resin) along with the famed Vanishing Point and some other standard series.

Parker
The Parker story begins in 1889, when George S. Parker established the company as an outgrowth of the small business he'd had making reliable pens for his telegraphy students (transcribing Morse being one enterprise where you don't want to have to wrestle with your pen). Capitalizing on several patents, chief among them for the so-called "lucky curve" feed (which curled outward to touch the inside of the barrel so as to draw ink out of the point when the pen was not in use, minimizing the danger of leaking), he quickly moved to a commanding position in the young fountain pen industry.

Waterman
Lewis Edson Waterman is commonly cited as being the inventor of the first practical fountain pen, just as Henry Ford is often supposed to be the inventor of the automobile. Neither supposition is completely accurate; however, it is certainly true that Waterman was the first big international success among fountain pen makers.

Pelikan
Pelikan has always been a full-line pen maker, and currently offers entire ranges of student pens such as the Level. At the same time, they have also continued to offer high-priced prestige pens and limited editions. They've also stayed involved in the ink, paint, and office supply business that formed their original base, which perhaps gives them the corporate foundation to pursue a full line of pens. In spite of (or, maybe perversely because of) being "number two" among German penmakers, Pelikan enjoys a very solid reputation for quality and performance among pen fans.

Sheaffer
The Sheaffer lever fill system would go on to become the standard of the industry in the U.S. and abroad for several years after the Sheaffer company itself gave them up in the 1940s. The lever filler was superior to other self fillers of the time because there were no parts to remove and lose (as with the Parker button-filler), no parts to have to carry around in order to accomplish the filling (as with matchstick and coin fillers), and no unsightly protrusions from the barrel (as with the Conklin crescent filler). On the strength of this innovation, Sheaffer's sales grew rapidly throughout the rest of the '10s.

Lamy
Exciting things don't start happening to Lamy until just after World War II, when they introduce injection-moded plastics into their manufacturing process with the debut of the Artus pen. As the company moved into the 1960s, they drew design inspriation from the decoratively-challenged, functionally-oriented Bauhaus school, with a line of pens capped by the 2000 (still in production), and all of their subsequent products are notable for their very modern design.
