Natural Gas Drilling in New York

Ranked #2,713 in Healthy Living, #51,281 overall

Looking for information on the environmental impact of natural gas drilling?

The Marcellus Shale is a type of rock trapped deep beneath the earth's crust. It contains natural gas, but companies have to use a type of drilling called hydraulic fracturing to extract the gas. Horizontal drilling is employed to capture more gas and is considered economical by the industry. New York is currently analyzing their Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement (SGEIS) prior to allowing horizontal drilling in the Marcellus Shale. While New York reviews the environmental impacts, other states are allowing companies to drill for gas. New York citizens are in a unique position to be able to look to states where this special type of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing are already taking place and decide for themselves if the benefits outweigh the risks. Take a look through this lens to see, not only what New Yorkers are talking about, but also what other states have to say about the consequences of drilling.

Please visit the link below "DEC revised draft SGEIS information and links" for information on the DEC's Revised Draft SGEIS. The comment period has been extended to January 11, 2012.

Well Permit Issuance for Horizontal Drilling and High-Volume Hydraulic Fracturing in the Marcellus Shale and Other Low-Permeability Gas Reservoirs.
NYS DEC revised draft SGEIS page
From the DEC's website: DEC received more than 13,000 public comments on the Draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement (SGEIS) issued in September 2009. The Draft SGEIS addresses permit conditions required for gas drilling in Marcellus Shale and other areas of the State.

In response to issues raised, DEC has prepared a Revised Draft SGEIS. As of September 7, the document is available for public review. To help those interested in understanding the issues involving horizontal drilling and high-volume hydraulic fracturing, several fact sheets are also available.

Proposed regulations regarding high-volume hydraulic fracturing (HVHF) are available for public comment. Comments will be accepted through close of business on January 11, 2012.

EPA's Mid-Atlantic Region has a natural gas drilling tip line for reporting dumping and other illegal or suspicious hauling and/or disposal activities.

Tip line number (toll free): 877-919-4372 (877-919-4EPA)

Tip email address: eyesondrilling@epa.gov

Tip mailing address: EPA Region 3

Philadelphia, PA 19103-2029

(Remind me again why the EPA needs a tip line for illegal hauling and/or disposal activities related to natural gas drilling when the industry asserts "Operators want to be a good neighbor coming into an area" [according to Brad Gill, a director for the Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York]).

Wow! You have so much information about this! I'm doing a report for my summer environmental science class and you have helped me a lot. This site helped a lot too. There are a lot of lenses about the topic that I'll have to look at.
