Franschhoek Valley

If you are looking for a weekend getaway that combines quaint charm and old world elegance, than Franschhoek accommodation will be perfect for you. Franschhoek is a small town in the Cape Winelands property region of South Africa. The town is situated in a valley, and surrounded by the vineyards, which are grown on the mountain slopes. These vineyards produce the world renowned, award-winning Franschhoek wines.

The town of Franschhoek was first established by the Huguenots who settled in the area over three hundred years ago. Here they brought their tradition of fine French foods and wines, and the French culture. Today the picturesque town retains its French influences, and is a charming and welcoming town.

South African Wines

A new wine era

The South African wine industry in general, and the Franschhoek wine region specifically, has of late become major players in the global viticulture arena. Along with this tremendous accolade come the challenges of ethical responsibility. So, how are we adapting and which changes are we implementing to ensure that we maintain a balance between productivity and ecological responsibility?

Mike Carter, the brains behind seriousaboutwine.co.za, recently suggested the following changes:

  1. Green is here to stay. The concept of 'clean' production is becoming more and more evident in the wine industry. In order to stay ahead of the curve, wine producers and cellars will have to embrace sustainability in both packaging and overall production.

  2. Building trust through branding. Sadly, having a quality product is no longer enough to ensure success in the wine industry. As has been the norm in fragrance and fashion for more than a decade, brand image is becoming a most important asset. Wine producers should strive to build up consumer trust by increasing their reputation and credibility.

  3. Don't think big, act big. While large consolidated cellars and producers may be good for a CEO's ego, the fact remains that smaller boutique operations are capable of managing quality control on a far greater level. It's time for the little guys to stick out their necks.

  4. Combine forces. Waste control can be managed much more effectively if suppliers, producers and retailers collaborate to increase efficiency throughout the wine supply chain.

It seems that the wine industry will be heading in much the same direction as every other agricultural trade avenue. As such, the Franschhoek wine region can breathe a sigh of relief, since sustainable growing and manufacturing practices has been the norm here for quite some time.

Franschhoek Wine

Enjoy French delights

A meal here is incomplete without a glass of the superb Franschhoek wine. Franschhoek has fairly rocky soil that retains water while still providing excellent drainage. This type of soil keeps fairly cool, which is excellent for growing grapes for Cabernet Sauvignon. Some wine estates specialise in just the red varietals, such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz, some specialise in the white varietals, but most estates will offer both red and white wines, including rose and sparkling wines. Franschhoek offers a local wine to suit every dish, and every occasion.

So whether you want a weekend away, a fantastic meal, or the perfect venue to celebrate a special occasion, Franschhoek can satisfy all of your requirements, and complement it with a glass of fantastic Franschhoek wine.
