Sir Francis Drake was an Amazing Adventurer
His exploits in The Caribbean and his battles with the Spanish are legendary
He was born in Crowndale, near Tavistock, Devon England and his his successful circumnavigation of the world between 1577 and 1580 ensured that he would be one of the best remembered figures of Tudor England.
He was the First Englishman to Sail around the World.
In June, 1579, Sir Francis landed in California and sailed as far north as the area that would become the United States-Canadian border. He then turned southwest and crossed the Pacific Ocean in two months time. It took another year to make his way through the Indies, across the Indian Ocean, around the Cape of Good Hope and back to England. Upon arrival, the queen knighted Drake aboard the Golden Hind.

His desire for the Gold of Peru made him a hero for many Englishmen right up to the present day.
His exploits of foiling the Spanish Armarda (known as singeing the King of Spain's Beard) by burning the Spanish Fleet when he realised he commanded an inferior fleet won him the war against the Spanish and honours and property here heaped upon him.
He was in fact the very essence of a schoolboys favourite hero.

Sir Francis Drake, Vice Admiral, (c. 1540 - 27 January 1595) was an English privateer, navigator, slaver, and politician of the Elizabethan era. Queen Elizabeth I awarded Drake knighthood in 1581. He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588, subordinate only to Charles Howard and the Queen herself. He died of dysentery after unsuccessfully attacking San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1595.
