Frango Chocolate Mints

Frango Mints has been a mainstay in Chicago since Marshall Fields acquired the trademark in the 1920's. For years Frango candy was produced in large melting pots on the 13th floor of the Chicago Marshall Fields State Street store until March 1999.

In March 1999, Marshall Fields then owner, Dayton Hudson, moved the making of this Chicago iconic candy to Pennsylvania. Many Chicagoans protested the move and actually stopped buying the candy.

In 2004, the Frango trademark along with Marshall Fields was acquired by May Department Store. May stores refused to let Macy's renew their trademark license of Frango.

In 2005, Macy's owner Federated Department Stores acquired May Stores and Macy's was able to sell Frango mints in its stores again. At the same time Federated rebranded all the Marshall Fields stores to Macy's. Federated also started looking into bringing back the manufacturing of the Frango mint to Chicago to help with slumping sales.

In 2009, Chicago candymaker Cupid Candies began making Frango Mints in Chicago once again. The 7th floor Frango viewing kitchen at the Chicago Macy's State Street store was reopened which shows the candy centers being covered in chocolate.

And now, since you can't make it to a Macy's store to get your Frango Mints, check out the products below and order them online throughout the year.

Buy Frango Mints at Macy's

Last year, Frango Mints were available on Amazon, however, it doesn't look like that is the case in 2011. Instead you will have to go directly to the Macy's website to buy Frango Chocolate.

The Classic Frango Mint One Pound Box

Everyone has done it, where they sit in front of the box of Frango Mints and eat one after the other. All of a sudden, there's only two left and you have a decision to make, do you guiltily eat the last two and pretend there never was a box, or do you put the last two Frango Mints on a plate and try to make it look like there was only three to begin with?

Here's a better solution, buy another box.

The Frango Bears

No, not the Chicago bears, the Frango bears. It seems, every year there is a Frango bear for sale and over the years they have become quite the collectable item.

In 2005, Department 56 created a Frango Truck for its Heritage Village. The truck is iconic as it still has the Marshall Fields name on it.

When did you have your first Frango Mint?

Every time I eat a Frango, I am transported back to my childhood in Chicago. My sister and I would sniff them out (yes, like bloodhounds). My grandmother would have to hide them, allowing us only one or two at a time. Makes my eyes water every time I eat them...still only one or two at a time.
